my new 120 rr

to late i aready cut out the doors.but im not going to make them doors im going to use magnets to hold on the whole panel.now the panel will just lift off and can be set aside out of the way leaving more room to get under the stand

Nice idea. Should look a lot nicer then doors. Are you going to just put metal plates that over hang a little bit in the stand for the magnets?

Get us a pick of that part when you get there.

As far as the 40 gallon for the fuge, I gave 40 bucks for that one, if you want to pay that for it, or if you have something to tade. normally I wouldn't part with it, but my new tank is going to start being set up mid summer at best, next year at worse. And you are already at the point you need it, so it's only reasonable to help you keep going forward.

I also have the 50 or 55 gallon acrylic fuge that came out from under that 300 gallon. Would take some work to make it work.

brian i will cal you later today and see what we can work out.you can buy magnet kits that have the plate and the magnet.i saw it one another stand

Cool Build! I love watching these kinds of things and hopefully can see it setup one day if I ever make it up to a R.A.R.E meeting when you're showing it.

almost ready for some nice oak stain.one more side to put on and some fine tunning and it will be ready to stain and then in to the house it go's.

Wow, very cool looking!!!! I wish I had some more manly genes so I could build things. Maybe I'll inject myself with some.

The stand looks great! Let me know when you get a chance to come by, bring Josh if he can come I have atleast one frag for his new tank now that I am flat worm free.

What color are you going to do the stand?
Kyletech has a stand that is dark black with some granite types of colors on it that I personally, truly like...If you are going with black, are you going to go with gloss, semi-gloss or Satin or Flat?

Just how big is this chiller? That's quite a ledge you have there!

How big is the fuge you are going to use with this setup? Will it go next to or underneath the aquarium?

the stand is getting stained with a light oak stain.the chiller is about 15"x15"x15".the cubby is bigger than the chiller so that i will have room to work around it if i need to

Any reasons for going with the magnets over good ol' fashioned velcro? I am going to be giving my stock black stand a facelift by attaching nice plywood, trim, stain, and what-not......I planned to attach the front piece with velcro so I could just pull it off and set aside.

Thanks,

Just in my experience I have noticed that velcro even the larger industrial types tend to wear when under a load.
If it is just holding something in place with no strain, it works fine, but if there is any weight to the otem it is holding in place it starts to get loose after awhile, usually just sagging, but sometimes failing altogether.

That is just my experience.

Hmmmmm.....what about if it is a solid 2" wide strip 3.5' long on top and bottom?

What magnet/plate are you going to use? And, how are you going to attach it to the wood?

With magnets you have near zero gap, movement, or sag. With Velcro you're going to have a squish zone that may not allow the panel to be flush and further, I agree the hook and snag part wears down over time and will sag.

There are some pricey but cool child-protective locks that use a magnetic wand to release the door/panel and otherwise it's locked in place. Think that's what I'm going to use for my side panels. Only trick is... what did I do with that wand? ;)

MThompson the magnet set i saw the magnets were mounted to a metal braket that was screwed to the inside of the stand amd the ones on the panel were the same way

So, are both sides flush with the wood? Meaning, that you need to mill out a space for the magnet/plate to fit into?

Got any pics of what you are planning?
