My new 180g

$800 for a 300 sounds like a great price.

I think the base price for a 180 is $600. The overflow and holes added the extra cost.
 
I'm getting anxious to get the tank here. I can't do a whole lot more till then. A little painting here, a little staining there.

I did order a DC-8 module for the controller and a 3rd 250 halide. I bought Ace out of threaded unions hoping they re-stock before next weekend.
 
I did get the canopy clear coated today, and the trim on the fuge stand. Oh, and attached the top and bottom plywood to the big stand...

The bad part is, I already had the tank in my house once but had to send it back! I've had the taste...
 
I decided to put the icecap fans in the top, blowing up instead of on the ends blowing in.

The way I see it is, with a 6' canopy, a 4" fan on each end will have limited function anyway, other than blowing hot air from the bulbs across the water. With them blowing up out the top, I think it will do a much better job exhausting the hot air.

Plus, they'll be out of view.
 
Dang, I just got done drilling 4 - 4 1/4 holes in the ends of my hood.I like your idea better as I have a 8 foot hood. I guess I could still put fans on top along with the fans on the side and have the fans on the side blow in and the fans on the top blow out

That would really move the air.
Personally, I think it makes a lot of sense having fans pulling air straight up. (maybe that's because I just came up with it 2 hours ago. :))

Mike I have heard a few people say that the problem with pulling air out of a hood is that the fans are pulling the humid air away from the tank and it causes some buildup on the fans as well as a reduced life.

From a coolind standpoint though it does make a lot more sense.

The canopy looks great by the way.

That does make sense, and I considered it, but decided it was acceptable. I may change my mind if I have to change fans every 2 months, but they're resistant, so we'll see.

(Wow, 2 big run-on sentences in a row. Hope the tech editors aren't reading...)
 
The hot air will rise. Just make the top's vents for the hot air to rise out. Have the fans on the side pull kool air in, keeping the hot air moving preventing excessive temp. buildup from dead spots or lack of airflow. With such a large area, I'd have like 4 vents on the top. And you'll save on the life of the fans also. This is what I'd do for an "open" light top. Now if you have a sealed light top, 4 opening on top, the two in the middle with fans pulling kool air down into the light top. The other two on top for venting. The sides, you can leave open to vent or add fans to pull the air out. Same idea behind good airflow kooling in a PC.
 
The other thing I'd maybe think about is how PC kooling has changed over the years because of the heat buildup of the components. One thing that has improved kooling greatly while also reducing noise is the use of larger, slow spinning fans. It's a fact, they move a greater volume of air, don't produce alot of noise, and reduce temps better. Food for thought boys. Fans in the PC world went from small 60-80mm fans to 120mm + fans while helping reduce temps as much as 30% over the smaller, faster spinning fans.
 
Alright... I'm currently without a tank. In anticipation of the 180 being delivered on Thursday Ed and I tore down my 55 today and put all my rock, corals and fish in his tank for now. I got everything out back. The sand is soaking in a bleach solution and the pumps and powerheads are soaking in buckets.

What an empty space on the wall!! (and this is the quietest I ever remember the house)

Hey everyone, my tank has really grown in the past day, I have a lot of frags for some reason!! :). Come over and I will make you a killer deal :). Mike, you are going to need a lot of frags to stock your new tank, come on over I think you will find a few things you would like :) LMAO....
