My new 375

Excellent! Very very nice tank.

I have a question for you. I checked your website and it mentions that:

"Other info: The tank was purchased with several scratches but I used an underwater sander kit and cleaned it right up. I still need to run the kit one more time."

Can you please let me know what underwater sander kit you are using for your tank? I have a acylic tank with some scratches here and there. I would like to remove it.

Thanks!

Thanks a lot for the info. It looks like a brand new tank.
I love all your fishes in the tank.

How bad were the scratches when you bought the tank? Any picture to show any scratch?

Did this kit really remove those heavy one?

Thanks again.

I could hardly see in the tank because it was scratches from top to bottom. Some scratches were bad. I was able to get most of them out, the only ones that were hard were the ones that were low in the tank, it is 30" down with a lip around the top.

Wow that is stunning. I like the mix of different shaped corals. The branching and plating are combined in such a nice way. I am also impressed with the long life of the fish. You have a 12 year old Hippo Tang and a 7 year old Purple Tang wow. I would love to see a group of Royal Grammas in your tank. I think every reef tank needs at least one RG.

I some more questions.
How did your corals grow under those 250 watt 6500k lights? How would you compare them with the 400 watt 14k lights as far as growth is concerned. The color difference is obvious. I was just wondering about the growth aspect.
What do you use for nutrient export if you do not use a skimmer? I use carbon and water changes only and am considering the same for my large tank that's in the planning stages. How often and how much water do you change?
Thanks

I did not have the corals under the 250 for very long before I got them back up 400s. I did notice a difference in color going from 65k on my 180 to 14k on the 375. Growth so far is about the same for the acropora corals but the montipora corals have slowed down wince changing to 14k

I have a small refugium under the tank but hardly ever remove any cheato. I have lots of little creatures in the tank filtering the water and I think that helps. I do a water change on the 1st and 15th of the month, I do about 80 gallons each time. I am getting about a 50% water change a month. At this point I do not run carbon and I think I will be after xmas, a few of my presents are going to be reactors to run carbon and phosphate remover if needed.

When you finished the wood, did you take it all off or did you stain it all in place? I have to wrap my stand still, I was going to get all my cutting and fitting out of the way then take it off and stain and lacquer it. Then secure it to the stand.

Your system looks really nice. Keep up the good work!!

I really like your Thompson's Tang. How long have you had it?

Since may

I did not take the wood off the stand, I maybe should have but did not. I am going to make a new canopy and stain it inside and out.

That's interesting. I would have thought it would be the other way around. When you had the 6500k did you use actinic lights for asthetics? I am wondering how many would be needed to tone down the yellow color of the light. I am asking these questions because I have three sun tubes above the spot where the tank will go and only two spots between for halides. I am trying to decide what to put there to get the most light for growth prefering to stick to 250 watt bulbs. I was originally thinking of using 10k bulbs with actinics which is what I have used on all my other tanks. If I went with 1400K without actinics I would have to bump up to 400 watts. I'm not even sure the 6500k could be toned down enough with actinics and I don't want to run crazy amounts of actinics that would eat up the electric bill. Decisions decisions.

I had actinics yes, to yellow without. I had 2 160watt VHOs for 3 400 6500ks.

250s would work fine unless your tank is tall. I did change out the middle bulb on my last tank to a 20k, that with a 6500k one each end looked nice

Please post more pics of the fish in the corner, 2nd pic down. I see in your early pics it was gray with white tail. I have the same fish now, but cannot figure out what it is. It appears it is changing colors in this picure. I thought mine was a palani.

which one the yellow one or the brown one

The yellow one is an Orange Shoulder tang and will end up white and black

The other one is a chocolate tang and is yellow as a juv and is now the adult colors.

o wait the greg with white tail passed away from a disease, I never did figure out the name of the fish or the desease that killed almost everything.

Current fish:
Hippo Tang (donated to me by a friend in 2005)
Hippo Tang (purchased 1995),
3 Green Chromis (purchased 1/2001) 4th added May2007
Orange Shoulder Tang (April 27, 2007)
6-line Wrasse (1/2006)
Chocolate Tang (May 2007)
Red Sea Emperor Angel (June 14 2007)
Sailfin Tang (May 2007)
Flame Fin Tomini Tang (May 2007)
Coral Beauty (May 2007)

So a 20k in the middle and 65k on the ends looked good? Didn't the sides look much different than the middle or did the bulbs kind of blend together? Sorry for all the questions. Not many reefers use 65k so that's why I'm picking your brains.

It was a little different but I liked it. I have been thinking of adding some 6500ks beside the 14ks I have not

Yep, the grey and white one was the one I was talking about. I guess you lost the adult emperor too. Man that was a beautiful fish.
