ahhh its so nice that there are others willing to say it the way it is thanks numpty... :-)
I second that thought! Thank you for your post numpty!

Kevin, my schematic talents are horrible but here is a picture of the original setup. The tank, lighting, and skimmer is different, but in this pic you can see very well the design.

The pipe and valve in the upper left is the feed from the fuge, and there are two float valves on the right. One is for that feed, and one is for regular top-off water. Pretty simple, but I do take advantage of gravity feed since the fuge is above the tanks.

HTH!

Thanks Kevin, this is what it looks like now:

I have to caution you though, that if you have a bad memory as I do, there is an achilles heel to this setup: Recently I acclimated a CBB in this tank but forgot to close the system feed afterwards. What happened was the main system water was used for top-off and by the time I noticed it, the salinity had reached 1.040...I killed all the snails in the tank. :(

I will now use some sort of reminder card to keep that from happening again!

wow Nice upgrade! oh no sorry about the snails! i probally have a worse memory than you, but i really like this concept!

I have to carry around a kitchen timer for my poor memory.....

not a good quality in a reefer, but we all get old, hit our heads, or whatever. I bought a PDA/phone so I didn't have to carry around both.

I'll give anything a try except for giving away the fish. With every ones help & input, I'm feeling better about the tank!

IMO there are plenty of ways to keep the fish and still lower the nitrites and ammonia. you will need some more filtration though and I am sure we can come up with a good filtration to add to help into that.

I'm a new reefer and a member of AP. I think it's great that you show the enthusiasm for the hobby that you do. I'm sure that some of the others meant well in their criticism, but they did go overboard. I believe you will do the best for your aquarium that you can. Again, I think those that criticize do care, but perhaps their knowledge could be tempered by reasonable advice. I look at some of the questions raised by some of us newbies and most of the experts take the time to try and gently educate us to increase our knowledge. Harsh criticism is not necessary. It's something that needs to be learned by those that give advice in any forum.
Just my two cents.
Good luck with all your endeavors Chuck. I certainly will be watching.

reefkeeping will get us all BrAiN dAmAgEd  . we are the one getting ich :D . and for the one who criticize has brooklynellosis :mixed:

 Chuck are you a big fan of Flavor Flav

Thanks for the welcome - and welcome dewey - you will probably get pretty frustrated asking anything on AP as the standard answer always seems to be use the search engine, rather than acknowledging that maybe husbandry methods may be a changing process or that maybe you didnt find the answer you needed. Its pretty hostile.
I wouldnt put much faith in the answers you get there either as they are usually from newbies who are recycling the opinions of others. If you check out the earlier bashing posts by a certain AP member it may be of interest to note he only has 1.5 years experience in SW and in that time has probably suceeded in killing more livestock than most people in a decade. The excuse was mechanical failure but in short he replaced a broken heater and let the temp climb way to much overnight - negligence. Its useful for classifieds but thats about it. Or monitoring the latest passing fad - OOh its acan month .

i got a couple Australian acans last week. they've got pretty wicked colours. I ve never seen these colour combinations. I will post some pics.

LOL - sorry cougerman but What i was meaning is the obsessive posts over the vendors getting in flavour of the month (Rare?!?)corals , then all going nuts and trying to out compete each other on the "we will be there queing at 1 am". Seriously they are so being manipulated its not even funny anymore - I had to laugh at the Auction of the two acans that went for ridiculous prices a couple of weeks ago - yes very colourfull on the closeups but will probably look like a nice dull grey/brown from any sort of distance.

Now sorry - I wont say any more on the subject .

Goodwin id love to see some more pics of how its doing - how are the frags coming along?
