Thanks Lunch for the plug...but some of you are right and some are completely dead wrong. I have been doing the hobby for 10 years plus a little. This hobby is full of people that want lots of information for free....yes for free. Go into a computer store and ask them to fix your computer for free, or give you the quick and simple thing to get it running again. So many in this hobby ruin it for others. Always slamming LFS, well let me tell you I am in financial ruin trying to run a LFS that had online or close to it prices.

jnarowe, please help me figure this out. I am trying to see your point. Tell me any other successful business that only marks items up 10-20%? Even shoe-stores, that have 30-40% off are still making $$$. I do not understand. This hobby is going to implode or something like that because it will only be online, due to lots of people who know nothing put up an online store and charge 10% over cost and sell things. Here is my biggest point, where do a lot of them get the information...yes some here but majority get it from the LFS...not all full of crap. I sold people what they needed...not what would make me the most $$$, and bam I still could not keep it open with no rent, low utilities, and such. I am a good business owner and run a maintenance business now that makes $$, good $$ but all to pay off the $80,000 worth of debt that I owe trying to run a LFS that had "good prices".

Please before you all go on a slamming-fest, think of others. Most LFS do not make money hands over fist, most are on the brink of closing. Just ask around. Might end up LFS being a thing of the past soon.

just venting and a lot of bottled up anger toward people who bash LFS without stating the other side.

Grant

I totally agree, and have been working on an article on this subject for some time.

I can't support stores that have bad attitudes, lie to make a sale, or have no respect for the animals they trade in. I drive between 1.5 and 3 hours to visit two LFS that I hold in high regard for their methods, honesty, and quality. There are two LFS within 10 minutes of my house that are the opposite.

LOL I know there are two near my house, that I absolutely hate, one is ok, but they are expensive and I've never been in there and not seen a text book example of ich. The other keeps their fish in individual boxes that are literally 16 square inches. There is this new lfs in Arlington that I've heard was pretty dang cool, but I haven't been up there to check it out. So 3 hours for a lfs. We are nuts.

The harvest.... 1 & 1/2, 5 gallon buckets of cheato. Lots of tiny little snails in these buckets...

Yeah, you are right Shawn. Sorry Chuck!
No problem, I think back to Marc's thread with all of the family dog photos...a little more off topic than this discussion....

nice work on the kee-to Chuck! I'll bet it smells nice too. :)

If you can save out the snails and mysid, that would be cool. Just drop them back into the fuge to breed.

Yep I will start a thread, sorry Chuck your thread spins off quite a few other threads...nice starting point and more traffic...

jnarowe, did not take personally, just a hard week and trying to be the best I can. I never sell anything I have not tried...I used to work in Public Aquariums so I have tried many things...worked in Vegas and used the Casinos money to try out new coral items and got a lot of knowledge doing it. Just hurts that cannot become a fish doctor and get paid for it...I am in South Dakota...so hard to run a nice fish store...

ask Chuck he has been there, have tons and tons of SPS....

well better shut up on that note.

Great harvest and love the lights Chuck.

You know, it would be nice if Melev could chime in here. When he was in town, I took him to both of the LFS and never got around to asking him what he thought of them. I think that he even took a few pictures in them. Grant runs a nice operation IMO and have spent more there than I would be willing to admit. A couple of my odd balls have come from there....Grant is now taking care of my shark which out grew his tank.

Crap Chuck, that is a huge harvest!

How often do you harvest?
Apparently I wasn't doing it often enough. I'm not going to let the refugiums get so over grown in the future. Melev set the lights on a 12/12 schedule so it is going to be interesting to see how fast it grows back. Prior to his visit, I had kept the lights on 24 hours a day.

I kept all on the ones that were crawling on my hands when I finished cutting it out......

hehehehe...I used to pick out all the snail babies one-by-one...until I had thousands.

The reason why you need to harvest it is that is the only way to actually export the nutrients. You are physically removing them, while giving the macro the space to grow and absorb more.

I feel Grant's pain. Believe me I do. Retail is tough, and even tougher when you have a product that dies at the drop of a hat. I doubt I break even on produce in my store, but I keep it looking as good as possible just so that customers feel like they are in a quality store.

So many times customers say rude stuff, often times without an awareness of it. And some customers are really just there to dump on you. I get bent all the time and that's why I don't work in the store anymore. I can't imagine trying to make a living in this hobby in the Dakotas. So many things going against you like low population density, high cost of getting product etc.

I need to clean my fuge lamps. I haven't had a harvest like that in quite a while.

I'm just glad that we have Grant and his store. He has amazing stuff and to no have to ship everything in SD is a great thing. Can't wait to get my 200gal up to go on a shopping spree :D

Chuck nice harvest. You'll grow more of that in NO TIME

The first store was nice, in that it had some cool choices in livestock. My preference was the second store due to the coral selection.

I'd probably shop at either, depending on what they had in stock that week.

i agree both stores are nice and grant has some awesome corals. 3/4 of my corals in my tank I think are from Grant. he takes great care in making sure everything is healthy before he sells it and gives great advice on how to take care of it once you get it home. very happy to have him.

and Chuck that is a lot of cheato, I am still yet to learn the secret on growing it as mine only lives but never grows:lol:

Well, I finally got in gear and got the wiring mess behind the tank up off the floor and semi organized. Melev insisted that be one of my priorities. Much more room behind the tank now.
