My New 675 Gal 6'X3'X5'

i have the swc fndw 400 skimmer its great but it eats too much energy 55 watts for the regular impeller and 85 watts for the needle wheel. i modify the air intake and reduce about 30 watts and also its very noisy so i have to set up the skimmer outdoor.as far as a controller neptune apex is great if you know how to set it up .it is capable of doing most of everything you desire.

Should I say with the reef Octopus or go with a My Reef Creations MR-8? I have heard that MR-8 can clog a lot. Or what about a Deltec, cost is not a high concern but I feel like I am overpaying for a unit that is large enough to handle my tank.
Also, What do the expensive controllers do that the basic models don't do?

i hate to go negative on my first post to your thread but here goes. i think you may have trouble keeping lps in a tank with a large angel. the emperator may not bother stuff but alot of them do especially as they get bigger. by asfur angel and regal both will pick on some lps corals. to comment on your lighting i think that with 400 watt mhs you should be fine for alot of sps. look at sanjays thread. his tank isnt as deep as yours but is lit by3 400 watters and has done very well with sps corals. you should get a reflector that spreads the light in a square pattern like a lumenarc i think.you may also want to put some t5 or vho along the front and back to supplement or add morning evening lighting as possibilities. your stock list is nice and conservative which is always good to see, but hard to keep the numbers low like that. i would look at one of the newer skimmers that is fed by the askoll pump. lots of solid skimmers that work well with that and many are under a grand. i would loose the horseshoe crabs as they will outgrow the tank and if alge control is important, and it is, i would get a couple tuxedo urchins, a sea hare, and a nice selection of snails, and maybe a few hermit crabs. i also think that the zebrasoma genus of tangs are great for algae control. sorry to ramble but just wanted to give you a little input. looking forward to this build getting going.

Ok. So it has been awhile. The house took"¦ well"¦ longer than expected due to my wife's lack of decision making and a flake for an interior designer. That being said the tank has been up and running for about three months now and doing great. I decided on the following equipment:
2X Xp -5000 Super Reef Octo skimmers feed by an Iwaki pump
1 X Jumbo BRS reactor running 6 cups of ROX cabon
1 X duel chamber BRS reactor running GFO
1 X 300 GPD 5 stage RODI
3 X 400 watt USHIO 14ks
2 X Par 38 LEDs (blue0
1 X 120 gallon sum
1 duel chamber Reef Octo calcium reactor (in desperate need of upgrade)
1 Reflow Hammerhead main pump (in need of upgrade maybe)
1 Reflow Dart Recirculation Pump with 1 1.5' feed and two trees with multiple returns
1 X 7 liter custom reactor with 500 GPD feed pump running Warner Marine Eco Bac (not yet hooked up)
1 X 150 gallon frag / QT tank run separately in basement with XP 3000 skimmer
All running on an APEX
700 LBS of Marco Rock
300 LBS of established split between the sump/ DT and QT
1 X 24" red carpet nem and 100 sps colonies (bought an entire 5 year old tank off of a guy)
I had 7 schooling yellow tangs and a pair of black onyx clowns from Divers Den but sadly the worst case of ICH, black ich and ring worm got into the tank from a guy who I bought one fish off of and now all but one tang is dead.
I will post an entire album of pics of the build when I have time. Here is one of the aquascape: IMG00018-20100622-2039.jpg

The xp 8000 looks good for this system
I am considering it at the moment for my tank
And use 2 Or more Tunze 6305 for circulation it's more energy efficient than close loop.
And good luck with the system

I know this is not about the tank but the rock work around your fire place looks really nice.

That must be an awesome room to sit back and drink some whiskey

When I saw youre first post on tank size I thought you crossed the width and height. Its nice to see someone with a tall tank. I got my tank (96x36x46) from the same place. I think the taller tanks look great even if they are a little harder to clean. I will be tagging along on this one. Good luck on youre project.

I will post updates tonight. I have 100+ corals in it now and about 30 fish. Everything is doign well except I had a bad red bug break out over the last month so some stuff is showing a little stress.

I was thinking about your build the other day and wondering when we were going to see some current pics. I love tall tanks and I dont see alot of them here at RC.

What'd you go with for a CO2 controller? I've used 2-3 traditional solenoid based and never been happy. Now I have Aquariumplants.com electric CO2 controller and it works like a champ. Check out their website.
