My New Bio Cube 29

just an observation. I see your thermometer in the corner. Get that out quick. I have had to deal with the aftermath of a glass thermometer, and an "accident". If it breaks you might as well throw the tank away.

Some pictures of my new zoos. There are actually two different kinds in the second picture. What kind of epoxy do people use and where can i get it? Superglue is just not cutting it on this one.

i feel like you need more live rock...from your first post you said you got 16lbs? is that what's in the tank now? ideally you want 1-1.5lbs/gal.
obviously with nano tanks sometimes you are limited with live rock options, but if you can manage to add a few more pieces without disturbing things too much, i would do so

just my .02

I disagree with this point. Bacteria will simply become more dense on less rocks as they consume food. Plus, you not require as much flow as in a well stocked LR tank.

I actually have about 24 lbs of live rock in the tank. I would like to add a couple more pieces near the back of the tank. I have also been wanting to add more sand. My fil gave me some crushed coral from an old tank of his. Is there any reason I can't add this to my tank?

if you do decide to add it make sure you rinse it very well. Also with the crushed coral you will have to clean it so the nitrates don't build up in it.

Looks good! What was the name of the zoa's you bought, second picture, farthest to the left? I have some that are just like it but don't know the name.

I don't know what the name of the zoa on the far left is. I thought I was getting a rock with all the same ones until I got home and they opened up. I actually got some tub blues on Monday but they still haven't opened? I was thinking about a brittle star and wondered what experience others had had.

What do people dose their tanks with?

Tried lots,

A+B two little fishies -- I like it, but is a bit expensive over here.
Salifert All in one -- very powerful, easy to overdose... Also, you need to add watch your ALK carefully with it. The bottle says to use a buffer... so i got the salifert one and accidentally overdosed it.. OOps.

Now I use Red Sea Reef Success Calc. Does alk & calc and is very easy to dose. makes the tank cloudy for a while (about an hour), but it seems to work very well for me.

I'm still working on how much to dose, think its around two measures a day. I'm just back from holidays and left my ten year old to dose it for me -- better than the wife doing it! (read not doing it)

Tested the water when I got back, ALK was 4.5 dKH(very low), Ca was 300 (could be worse). Have been double dosing every day since to get it back to normal prior to a needed WC.

Tested just now after double dosing (twice a day) so quad dosing for a week.

ALK - 9dKH
Ca - 320ppm

Think I'll do a squirt of salifert All in One and hope for the best!

I know that I haven't posted in a while but work and a bunch of family obligations have taken away a lot of time for my true love, my aquarium. I do feel that my candy canes aren't opening up and don't look very happy at all. One thing that I was thinking is they are possibly too high up in the tank? Can anyone tell from the pictures I have posted before? Thanks for your help!

Bristle star...

Bristle star...

Well, I can't tell you much about the candy canes, but I did have a green bristle star in my last tank with a few hermit crabs, turbo snails, and a maroon clown. He was very active and amusing to feed at dinner time  and got along with the other fish very well. The only thing that seemed to terrorize him were those nasty bristle worms. They would eat the ends of his legs towards the end of the tank.

I think you should be okay with one... Just be careful as I suspect that they'd easily be able to knock over corals that they could reach.

Other than that, I think you'd be good to get one. Just be sure that you get one that won't outgrow the tank. Our green one grew pretty massive in our 40g.

Oh oh oh! Concerning your zoos...

If you do get a bristle star, make sure he doesn't agitate the colony. Non bon, mon amis. :)

when i first started in the hobby and didn't know any better, i bought saltwater fish at petco....they have no clue what they have! damsels i would think they would be fine....you can't kill those guys!

So my candy canes are looking really bad and I don't know why. My water params seem to be fine when I tested them. Here are some pictures of when I first got them and now.
