my new cap eaten?

well i got a lil red cap frag from jay while at the meeting here arre some pics of it...i noticed that a little of it was going away at a time while my lights were on and no critters were by it and i turned my lights on tonight to see it in worse shap.....yesturday what was missing from the cap frag was the smaller white patch....and tonight this larger patch which was gone while the lights were out.....the only other sps in the tank is the one from bills tank which i won and the one i got from travis at the last frag swap and that one from travis was and is growing nicely....the other things i have are trumpet coral...polps...frog spawn...bi color hammer...mushrooms and kenya tree.....again the newest in there are jays and bills frags.....btw no i didnt dip them cause i forgot to get some dip from jay since i had run out....anyway,im in no way saying bill or jays frags infected my tank just to be clear...just trying ta find out whats up...here are the pics

Did you touch any of it with your fingers as you were trying to place it in your tank? I got a piece of the same monti cap from Jay and mine is doing great. I have had corals to bleach or kinda be faded as they were trying to grow......like the color stall out using the energy to build new skeleton.....just some thoughts. You could have freshwater dipped.
 
i dont think i touched any part of it and yea i was too tired and forgot to fresh water dip it.....ya think a fresh water dip could help now? And if so then for how long?
 
It might/might not....If it did have a parasite it may have interest only in the cap....I swish in freshwater the same temp as the tank for about 15 seconds when I do zoas.....
 
Looks like STN or RTN to me as something is causing the Coral to die. Slow Tissue Necrosis/Rapid tissue necrosis are sometimes just hard to ID the reason it's happening. But my guess would be a temp change or Salinity change that was too much of a swing for it to survive, Fragging the Dead parts off may help to stop the spread of it to the whole piece. JMHO

This is what makes keeping SPS so hard. Sometimes I've had a piece die off for no known reason when 15 other SPS were thriving in the same system.

Try to think about how the coral was handled, your acclimation process and what your current tank parameters are now. Write it down so you'll remember for the future and try to pinpoint what might have gone wrong.

Temperature is a big time killer when transporting corals, especially SPS. Even for short trips I use a cooler, or at least a used fish box with styrafoam cooler, to transport my corals in.

I agree with Bill about trying to frag off the dead parts, or frag off the still living part. Is there anyone close to you that could help you out fragging it? HTH,

If that is Monti cap from the very fuzzy pic I can't tell at all. (NP I take pics like that too)

The glue that some one uses to glue a frag of Monti cap down to a frag plug will almost always kill the top of the coral this is expected. Usually I now pinch Monti cap between 2 rocks and that is a great way to get it going in a tank until it encrusts. If this is Monti cap I will give you a big piece when I get to Nashville. after my tank move. Good luck with the rest. It might be one of the best SPS to start off with as it is pretty resilient. I have had some come back when I was trying to kill it off. If you can keep your parameters OK it should recover from that if it is a glue kill off.

Same thing happened to a redcap of mine. I think it got stung by another coral when I fragged it and placed it to close to another frag. Those red caps are very, very hardy though and since then it has really came back.
 
No jay has some really nice pieces and shares them with club members at a reasonable price for the maintenance of their care to get them where they are.

i will be testing them here in a few....just put the lights on and it's in horrible shape...worse then the pics now

i'll take you up on the offer being that caps are one of my favorite sps there is...i'm not a big sps fan other then their colors....i'm more of a lps and softies fan, but i love the way caps grow among a few others

My vote is RTN. If the flesh is melting off of the calcium structure then it is certainly RTN. I got two SPS along with a bunch of softies and LPS. Both the SPS came down with RTN. The rest of the corals were fine.

Could it be a problem with my husbandry toward SPS? No clue but both these SPS came from the same vendor. I've also got some SPS in the tank that have never had the slightest issue.
 
I have three diffrent colors you are welcome to if you like those esp the growth I would look at confusa and spongodes as well pretty cool Monti's the family is so very huge I thought about having a tank with only Monti's but then it would have to be a pretty big tank. I will probably do that in the future though as I have been thinking about it for a while.

have any pics of your tank i could see? and just an update here...i checked my alk and cal and both were low....my cal is riding at 300 and i dont remember the kh but it was low....though i just did a water change so that will help a tad.....have a feeling soon i may need to get 2 part
