My New Orange Spot Filefish

I had posted some info in the other thread that is active, but I didnt want to take away from Paul's info, so I will start this one.

I recieved this pair yesterday from DD. As expected, shipping was great and they settled right in after acclimation.

I began to work on the feeding last night, and as of now, I am happy to report the following.

They both eat Frozen Hikari Mysis and Brine. For most of the larger pieces, they mouth it, spit it broken up, and then eat the pieces. The male is much more interested in these. They both eat frozen cyclopeeze like crazy. Nutramar Ova is also accepted.

Now for the fun. I added in some NLS small fish pellets today and the female really went after them. No hesitiation, gobbled them up. The male would mouth them, spit out, and try the smaller pieces as described above.

Feedign them 4 times a day atm, and the early signs are promising!!

I will try and get a video of them eating up in the next day or so.

Here are some pics (forgive the quality)

Welcome to the club! Be very happy yours are eating immediately. Getting them to accept food from the water column can be very tricky.

Mine loves spirulina flakes, so you may also want to try that. The flakes seem to be easy for them to eat.

beautiful. congratulations!

I see you utilize some majestic plastic plants in your QT as well.

What kind of set-up do you plan to put yours in once they're out of QT?

Good luck!!!

Tried Spirulina flakes as was mentioned and they agressivly went after it. In fact, thus far the only limitation as to what they will eat is the size due to the small mouth.

They appear to prefer eating out of the water column, in the flow as the food is moving towards them. They liek to stay in one spot and pick out of the flow. Once the majority of the food is eaten, they will then forage the bottom for remains.

As far as long term, I woudl very much like to set up a species tank, I am almost compeled to provide a tank where they are the main focus.

Perhaps a 60 cube?

Thanks for the comments. Ill keep you posted.

Congratulations! Those are beautiful! Had they been eating at the DFS facility? It's great to hear people have success with fish that are historically impossible to keep.

I think a 60 cube species tank would be awesome!

I have had a mandarin goby for a year but i went on a trip and my dad didnt know what he was doing and killed it:sad2:

Looks like it was a healthy fish with good body weight. That is a bummer.

If you get an OSFF (I'd recommend a m/f pair) from Diver's Den that are already eating prepared foods, I think you'd have a good chance at success. If you tried to train one yourself, it's more risky though people have had success.

As a quick update to mine, I lost the female to some strange disease apparently. It wasnt crypt, almost looked like velvet, but never got that bad. In addition, she began to show what I thought could only be internal bleeding/bruising. I treated for a bacterial infection in a QT tank, but she never made it. The worst part is that she ate like a horse through it all.

That being said, the male is doing great and continues to eat well. I am not sure if I will ever be able to find a lone female.

Do we know whether or not multiple males will fight in one tank?

more challenging means i stare, talk to it and run a lil more late for work everyday "you be alive when daddy gets home ok and tell the cleaner wrasse your clean take a day off" works everytime

You know I noticed my Male and Female are not getting along nearly as well as they were the first month or so. Not that they are in a mortal death match but the male is definitely wanting his space and will chase the female around a bit if she doesn't give him his space when he wants it. I would say they spend 20% of their day fighting while the rest of the time they seem ok. Is this pretty normal?
