My New Red Carpet Anemone

Just a few pics of my new red carpet anemone that I got this past Saturday. After keeping two bubble tips in my 90 gallon, I’ve really been fascinated by anemones and been really getting into these guys.

He is a red Stichodactyla haddoni carpet anemone. I have him in my 120 gallon tank. He’s still pretty small right now, only about 5” across. After drip acclimating him it took me about 4 minutes to place him on the substrate. This guy’s tentacles were so darn sticky I had one heck of a time getting him off my gloves. Thank goodness I was wearing glove when I was handling him. He has now moved into a different spot so I’m hoping he has already found a place he likes and will soon dig his foot into the substrate and stay put. I fed him last night and he ate pretty good.

As soon as he settles in, I want to get two clown fish but I have not made up my mind as to what type of clownfish yet. Most likely Picasso or ocellaris. I still have to do more homework on that.

Other than silversides and mysis shrimp, it there any other foods that you guys have found really good success with ?

I don't doubt your ability or anyone in keeping anemones but how old is your tank.
The rocks and sand look to be brand new except the two rock with coraline. I assume you are seeding the new rocks with the two rocks.
Can you give us some system specs?

I'm not a fan of feeding anemone obsessively. Especially when it's new and dusting to the tank.
Looks like the haddoni is already moving.....

Here’s the complete set-up info (please let me know if I forgot something)

I have a 120 gallon display tank (4’X2’X2’) with a 55 gallon sump made from a standard 55 gallon tank. I’m using a Skimz SK181 skimmer, and a vertex reactor with bio-pellets. I run carbon and phosphate remover passively in the sump. I used 65 lbs of cured live rock when I set-up the system about 4 or 5 months ago. Almost all of that rock is in the sump. There is about 10 lbs of live rock in the DT that I added from my other tank. I also have about 90 lbs (give or take a little) of dry rock in the display. This doesn’t include the live rock rubble I added along the back of the DT tank (maybe around 20 lbs but I’m only guessing) I added a about ½ of the dry rock about 2 months ago. For lighting I have 6 bulbs of T5HO. For water flow I have a quiteone 600o return pump, two Tunze 6045 powerheads with a tunze nano wave box which also has a tunze 6015 controllabel power head (might have the wrong size listed in the controllable power head, can’t remember for certain)

The parameters have been stable for the time the tank has been set-up, 0 ammonia , nitrite, nitrate, phosphates. PH is at 8.2, Cal at 400, dKH at 9.6.

For stocking I have: 6 line wrasse, a potter’s angle, and a hippo tang I’m planning on adding two clowns in a few months. I have some zoas, two plate corals, some green star polyps, a hammer, a tourch, some duncans and some clove polyps for my coral stocking.

He did move the first night in the tank, but now has been in one spot since. I looks like he is already starting to dig his boot into the substrate just in front of the at rock.

I was planning on feeding him about every 3 or 4 days while he is getting used to the tank and then weekly afterwards. That had really worked for my last two bubble tips when adding them to my other tank


Edit: I forgot to mention, I have about 12 snails for my cuc right now. About a month ago the diatom stage ended.

We feed ours shrimp pieces and have had great luck with that as a treat.

Yes, I will be adding clowns in a few months after the red carpet has time to settle in and assuming it's big enough to handle all that love'n

I havn't made up my mind on which clowns yet, I still need to do some more home-work on that.

Well I had to move my anemone to my other tank, a 90 gallon. He just did not like the wave maker. This will work out a lot better in the long run I beleave. I orginally wanted just SPS in this tank, but now I'm thinking a SPS and anemone tank with be great. My acros are growing like weeds and the tank has been set-up for 8 months now so my red carpet should feel right at home here

I moved him with the rock he was attached to and placed him in a spot in the 90 gallon that has similar flow that he seams to like.

He's a little stressed right now but looking OK for just being moved

Danreefs is correct, I siliconed rock to the overflow to give it a more natural look
