My new S. gigantea

OrionN

Moved on
Noon today, I got a little time so I went to a few LFS here in Corpus Christi just to look around. I saw a tiny S. gigantea at Petco of all place but I guess beggars can't be too choosy, plus there are slim picking here in Corpus. He looks very healthy with tiny mouth well attach to a piece of rock and vibrating like crazy. It was under low light and low current. He is light green in color with some pinkish and white. He is also slightly bleached.
For 30 dollars, I got him into my office tank, well attached right under my 250 W double end MH with lots of current. Even with the current whiped his tentacles around, he is able to hold his oral plate firm and project into the current and his mouth is very small. I will bring my camera and take picture of him tomorrow.
One important observation on this anemone is that his mouth is very asymmetrical on the oral plate. it is as if he is the product of a recent split.
Sorry about no picture. it will come tomorrow. I have a good feeling about this anemone, but know that I am still a long way from know that he will survive in my tank.

30 hrs or so without deflating. I forgot to bring the camera to work rushing out the door this AM so I will have to try to get a picture tomorrow.

Here is the picture. I am less optimistic today. It deflated a little today, I will keep my finger cross.
The anemone is actually semi circle in shape with mouth only 1 cm from one edge but about 5 cm from the other 3 sides. Like I said earlier, it is like it is a product of a newly divided anemone.

Well his mouth is tight(appears anyway), and his tenticles are longish. Is it sticky? Appears rather bleached, but can just be the pic.

I was gonna save a bleached Sabae from Petco, had a tag for a carpet also(sold/gone), but was advised that it would inspire them more to stock more unhealthy animals? Worth a thought.

Please update in a month, with stunning pics =). Good luck and great health.

...alright thought about it and, it's a gigantea, i highly doubt petco ordered it as such. looks reasonably healthy for a gig found at a store and i think it would be futile for anyone with the skill to attempt one to leave it there.
i'm told only select petco's carry inverts such as clownfish hosting anemones and from what i've seen they only receive a small few at any given time. i've seen a heck of lot more bleached sebaes in the hand full of better lfs in our area than i've ever seen at our local petco's.
i took a pic earlier today of this not so bleached sebae in a tank at one of my local petco's. it is the only sebae anemone in the store, unlike the tank full of totally bleached sebae's constantly found at many of the well regarded lfs's in my area!

He said it was a Sabae. Did you purchase Mark? Just think Petco sending Nems to tanks lit by T-12/T-8 is a bit irresponsible?
I'm willing to bet OrionN's Nem was labeled (sp.) with a pic of a Haddoni next to it.
I'm hoping for the best from OrionN's, but also hoping Petco keeps these online and outta their stores.
If they had a Gig when I was/am there, and looks in good shape, I might try it, but that will be a decision that happens if it happens.

They lable and sell it as a carpet, so they are not technicaly wrong, but certainly the sale person cannot tell a Gigantea from a Haddoni. This Petco actually got a few carpet in and they are in good shape also, as good as the two LFS here in Corpus Christi. Their tank condition however is not good for longterm survival of anything but BTA and Haddoni carpet.

no, s.f., i had a hard time resisting and went back to see how it was doing. that particular store stocks some very unexpected fish finds for a petco and keeps them in good size holding tanks. i hate when stores use tiny cubbies, so depressing to me and i'm sure the fish too.
the "standard" twin-bulb T8 holding tanks aren't different from what many a lfs hold anemones in. petco's vary and i was happy when told they need company approval to carry inverts such as clownfish hosting anemones, etc..

I have not seen him, just got back intown. He was Ok on friday. He does deflate for a short time (20-40 min at a time) everyday, but then inflate to normal.
Will see if he do OK or go down the tube (slowly) like all of my attempts at Gigantea in the past.

He is still living but do deflated and then re inflated. I am not sure if he will make it or not. The mouth is tiny still. We will see.

I think my Gigantea is dying a low and painful (to me) death. It open less of and deflates more all the time. It is almost 1 month in my tank at this time, but will not be there much more, IMO
