my new tank

I agree it is looking absolutely great, and its nice to see that you have done good research before diving in!

When I started my first tank, I used to freak out whenever I noticed anything going the least bit wrong. I'm hoping that once my second tank is up, I won't be the same way. Poor folks at RC, and my wife, dealing with that! :) My best lesson was that undesirable things will happen - algae, pests, hardware problems, water parameter problems, sudden livestock issues, etc, but I think that's what keeps this hobby so intense! All problems can be dealt with with patience; prior anticipation and subsequent planning goes a long way, too.

I can't wait to follow this thread!

Well i finally got the return pump here yesterday and was able to kick everything on. The water is way more clear today after running the pumps and such all night. i think i still have some tweaking to do with the skimmer to get it working 100%. anyway here are a couple pics i took with my iphone this morning.

Hey blownsvt its dave from sf hope you like the rock. It took over a week before that dang sand dust settled for me. hope everything is working well you have a nice setup and it will only get better

hey man, how'd it go looking at that tank? was it even close to what the lady said it was?

well my tank has been sitting with live rock since last friday. I decided since my test kits are here that i would run the first round of tests. I don't know if it would have cycled really fast because of having all the rock going from one tank right into mine in a matter of hours or what but these were my speciffics.

salinity - 1.026
PH - 8.2
ammonia - 0 ppm
nitrite - 0 ppm
nitrate - 0 ppm
calcium - 480 ppm
carbonate - 179 ppm

I didnt do too bad, 210 oceanic with stand, canopy, sump, and iwaki pump. Cant wait to set it up. It looks alot better with the pumps turned on water is much clearer. What kind of skimmer are you using?

damn you are going to put a 200+ gallon aquarium on an upper floor?

tested again today.....

salinity - 1.025
ph - 7.4 should i be dosing? i have heard ph is not really that critical
ammonia - 0ppm
nitrites - 0 ppm
nitrates - 0ppm
d/kh - 8
calcium - 480-500 ppm

i think i will get a phosphate test. been leaving the light off today to help curb the growth of whatever i got growing on the sand and rock.

i have been testing just like this for a couple weeks straight so i put in a CUC and a pair of clowns. they have been in for 2 days now and seem pretty content and are eating well. just have to find a good way to combat what i think is algae. the snails seem to be working on it on the rocks but won't tough the stuff on the sand.

GHA - green hair algae. Normal phase of new tank. Hopefully it will go away in time. In my tank I had a break out like at like 3 yrs old and it took forever to overcome, come to find out it was the reservoir I was storing my RO/DI water in. Nice set up, I am looking forward to watching your progress.

yeah i am thinking about getting a few more turbo snails. the guy at the LFS said they are the best bet for algae on the the rock. the first day it was a tiny little bit so i only got one of those. then the next day it blew up and there was 10x as much. so now i wish i had more of them buggars. they don't seem to like the sand much though. do i need something else to work on the sand?

also on the wish list that i may try to get away with.....

emporer angel
raccoon butterfly
lionfish

corals will be mostly softies to start out with. I would like to get somethign to host the clowns in. i was thinking about trying to use a frogspawn but heard the it can sometimes cause black spots on the fish from its sting. doesn't always happen but it can i guess. anyone have experience with that?
