My Ocellaris breeding thread

Otoheim and Top Dressed Otoheim. It is larval growout feed, basically really small fish pellets. The Top Dressed Oto has astaxanthin added to bring out the orange/red color on clowns.

duh...makes sense now.. haha. :hmm4: Awesome thread btw. How are subsequent batch's doing?

My male went skydiving. I've introduced a small juvi with the female and have paired up, but it's going to take a while is my guess before anything happens.

Sorry to hear that hope all works out for you...
I lost my banana boat aka yellow coris wrasse I cannot find him anywhere so I know how you are feeling....

Yeah they tend to break up easily. I just keep shrinking them until they can no longer be used. The are the light blue colored from marineland I think.

10 more leaving home today. I saw a beautiful pair of gold stripe maroons yesterday at another LFS, I was going to trade some ocellaris clowns for them, but then I realized I really have no place to put them, so I passed, but they were absolutely stunning. They also had a very light orange colored maroon, upon closer look, it was an ocellaris/maroon hybrid! The middle stripe had the characteristic ocellaris/percula forward pointing edge.

great thread!

what would you suggest on how to catch the newly hatched fry? I read you initially used flashlight and coffee mug. I am thinking of raising a batch just for fun, so I don't really want to spend a lot on new equipment.

thanks

The last few batches, I just used a brine shrimp net. Used a LED flashlight and just left it on a corner of the display tank for about 20 minutes, then I caught them with the net. I would repeat the process 2 or 3 times until I no longer saw larvae swimming around. I had a small beta tank right on top of my DT, so that the larvae wouldn't be out of water for more than 2 seconds. I had about the same mortality rate the first 4 days using either method.

What size would you recommend for the baby clown tank? I was thinking about 10 gallons.

I'm new to this and plan on breeding the two Ocellaris Clowns my local Petco ordered for me to pick up at the store. Also, could you give some details on how you set up you tank for the baby clowns? If so that would be great. I love reading you posts and plan to continue reading them. Plz continue posting!

My "nurseries" are all 10 gallon tanks. I put a heater horizontally placed with an equally long bubble wand under with moderate air flow so the babies don't rest on the heater and get fried. Put in a thermometer and an ammonia badge. I fill about 1/3 of the way the first 2 days, to make water changes and cleaning easier. Then the next 5 days I slowly fill it up after water changes so that by day 7, it is 2/3 of the way filled. Then I do nothing during meta, other than add some chloramx for ammonia control and drip in some fresh water to maintain salinity. After all have gone through meta around day 12 or 13, I fill it up with about 2 inches left from the top and add a sponge filter.

You always use water from the parent's tank to do your water changes. Maintain a temperature of around 80 to 82 F for good growth rates.

Here's a look today. The guy in the 2nd photo is one of the ones with the dark tail stripe. He also has a red marking in his anal fin which is unique among all others.

This is my favorite thread! I love it! I cannot wait for my back ocellaris breed! I bought them as a mated pair so I hope soon!

Beautiful clowns.

Are you sure the red marking isnt a sore of some sort?

It is definitely coloration as far as I can tell. There are no signs of damage to the fin, there is no bump, nor does the fish act stressed in any fashion. He has had that for the last 3 months or so when it started to color in. It was fainter at first and it has gotten brighter as he has grown. The tail stripe is a bit darker than the picture shows, he is just right under the T5HO 10K lights. I have others with similar markings, but in different spots. Though this guy's marking is bigger than the other ones.

12 more finding new homes tomorrow.
One of the ones that I sold last time made it into the LFS' display reef tank. So he will grow up there!!!

How are you guys takeing pics of your fry? I had only 1caught last night and they are so very small. The rest should hatch tonight hopefully.

I took a close up one of a larvae swimming inside my DT. It was one of the batches I didn't raise. So I shone a light in the front of the tank, and lots of larvae flocked to it, then I just starting snapping photos with my Dslr and out of 30 or so shots, I got a couple of good ones, one of which is posted in this thread.
