My Ocellaris breeding thread

Thanks. I have lost five to six babies this week and now one looks like he has flared gills but I don't know if he was just defending his area but now I can't find him. I moved them to a 20long this morning hoping that will help.
My ocd for cleaning got real lazy I got to get it back. watee parms were not the best, ni .10, na .20 and ammon was also about .20ish.

There's no way to keep nitrates low in my growout, the bio load is too big, and since they are fed a high protein diet with the pellets for growth, they just generate a lot of bio waste. I don't know if I'm lucky or what, but other than my early accident of dropping a rock and crushing a pair, I have yet to find a dead clown in growout during my weekly cleanings. Last weekend I found 2 of my larger clowns in the sump tray on top of the prefilter. It was a bit clogged so there was about 1 inch of water. I have no idea how they got there, or how long they were there. My overflow is one of those with the little slits on them, but too narrow for any of the clowns to go through. So I have no clue how they made it through the plumbing, but they were alive, I scooped them up and they are now like nothing ever happened.

Is flared gills contagious to the other baby clownfishes?
And if I need to move the one that has it can it be treated since he or she is still very young like 5 months old????

Flared gills are basically a deformity, it is not contagious, but I don't think it can be cured. Most breeders cull flared gills. I removed them and am using them as population fish on my frag growout tanks. There are no other fish with them. They also tend to grow really slow.

breeding orange and black clowns

breeding orange and black clowns

I have an orange ocellaris and was thinking of adding a black ocellaris in hopes of breeding. The orange clown had a mate but ended up dying a few weeks ago and they never did spawn even though they were doing the dance for a couple of weeks.

What kind of clown breed would come out of mixing these two colors?

I believe you will get the "mocha" color. Not exactly black, but more of a deep brown color. Some will come out normally colored, but it is doubtful that you will get any pure blacks.

Last Tuesday I introduced one of my BTA's to one of my coral frag tanks that has 3 of my clowns from one of my batches. This moring, they were hosting!!!

Ernieq since you have been breeding the Ocellaris and I recall that you said that they mature faster than the Perculas what is the youngest age have you seen them start breeding and laying eggs?
I know they are just way to young but I bought a snowflake ocellaris and phantom ocellaris during the summer.. I am guessing they are about 1 to 1 1/2 years old but they have been cleaning a rock feverishly and rubbing against the rock like they are about to lay eggs.

I've only been breeding for about 1 year. So the oldest ones I have are now about 13 months. I do have one of them paired up with a female in a tank, but there are no signs of "the dance" yet. I'm told they are sexually mature at about 18 months, but it varies based on temperature and other factors.

ernieq - you still use a brine shrimp net to catch your larvae out of the broodstock tank? I recently tried a 1/4" tubing method which absolutly did not work at all. I then reverted to scooping them up with a coffee mug. In retrospect, the net would have been MUCH easier with a much higher collection rate.

Any tips or tricks you use in collecting?

Haven't had any spawns since my male went skydiving. I did use the net to collect the last batch and had good success with it.

I cant believe I just got to the end of this awsome thread everything ive been reading is a huge help for my clown nursery project coming soon...... I have a quik question I own a pair of true perculas that are spawning already do these steps in filtration food and stages of development apply to most clowns fry or just occelaris. Im just making sure with true perculas I can follow these same guide lines.

All the steps apply. Although the stripe development on perculas is a lot longer than ocellaris. My ocellaris clowns typically have all 3 stripes by the time they are 25 days old. Perculas can take months to develop all 3.

This is so true my babies are now 5 months old and still do not have all their strips and have partial middle stripes a few have no middle stripe about 90% are probably going to be misbars. One is really cool though and I might keep it. The middle bar is complete on one side and goes around to the other side and splits in the middle of the body and has the black band around it...

Ernieq on your 55 gallon tank is it bare bottom? Or do you have sand in there?
Do you have any clean up crews in the 55g with your babies?

The 55 is bare, otherwise cleaning all the gunk out would be near impossible. I don't have a clean up crew, there's no food that ever gets to the bottom, they little (or should I say big) buggers eat everything before it hits the bottom, they are voracious feeders. I could probably feed 6 or 7 tablespoons of 1mm pellets and it would all be consumed, but I'm now up to 2 tablespoons (one on each side of the 55) and that seems to be holding them well enough. The skimmer cup gets emptied every two days.

Here's a look today. The older ones are now 15 months old. They seem to be growing in "groups" Some have not grown much while the bigger ones get bigger, and the ones in the middle seem to have stayed at around the 1.75 inch range. Some of the bigger ones are almost 2 1/4 inches, they look HUGE compared to the smaller ones. I am "down" to 168 clowns, sold 108 so far. Not selling for a while. I am going to split them up into a pair of 55's when I move into my new home, which will have a fish room!!!! One of my two misbars can be seen on the left side of the screen in the middle from top to bottom.

Thanks Ernieq I will be cleaning out my 55 tomorrow and see if I can find one of those tank dividers and move them in there in hopes they will grow more it is like they stopped growing.

They do fight occasionally, but since there are so many, the fights only last until the other fish runs away, the aggressor typically does not chase, I mean how could you find the one amongst 150+? I will find a few with a frayed find from time to time, but no significant. Some of them have resorted to hosting the bubble columns from the sponge filters.

I love your thread and your details. I've spent the past 3 weeks reading it.

Just recently had my pair of occelaris spawn after about 4 years and I'm trying to get everything perfected to catch and rear the fry.

They just laid clutch 2 tonight and if all goes well, hatch night will be on Christmas.:bounce2:
