My own AEFW (Acro Eating Flatworms) images

Clint, I know exactly where I got them. I can't remember the guys name but he lived in San Antonio. He was moving and had a nice tank. I bought a ton of frags from him and I noticed them about 3 weeks later. He had a big thread on MAAST when he was moving and a lot of people from there got corals from him. So far I've lost all of my favorite corals, most of what I have left is crap. I lost the Oregon Tort and Cali Tort that I got from you.

Not you also.:( Where do you think you got the little bastards?

I'm not sure and I don't know who all bought frags from him. I tried finding the old thread on the local board to see if anyone else got them too, but I couldn't find it. There's no question that's where they came from though. I hadn't added any frags in months before I got these and I haven't added any since.

do you know if those other people who bought from him got aefw

pickle311 - I got mine from thatfishplace.com, and I ordered 1000 tabs for like $103. They just arrived today so if you need some, let me know (I have plenty). Let us know how your treatment goes ... Clint and I will probably be starting a thread on our club forum for our treatment.

Dudester (aka "mojo" on ARC)

Holy crap!! Thats gonna be a ton a dead flatworms!!!!! You should post some stuff here too dude, Id love to see the results. :)

Melev, any updates on the tyree and others?

The Tyree continues to look different than before, but the tips are purple and I see polyp extension.

The A. secale looks pretty ugly, but is still alive.

Just an update.....I called Aquarium products and talked to one of there product technicians about the fluke tabs. I asked him what they recomended as the best means of removal from a closed system. He said that the three active ingedients will actually be broken down over a 72 hour period and exit the water colum via skimmer. He said that for imediate removal, you can do a water change or run carbon which WILL strip the fluke tab from the water column. He said that they don't "recomend" it b/c that was not what it was created for but he has plenty of customers that use it "in tank" for fresh and SW fish parasites with no problems. He also said that it will have very little if any effect on the tanks biofilter.

My bet is that at the normal dosage on the box, you could treat the tank and it would be effective. I wouldn't run any carbon or skimmer for the first day or so to make sure it stays in the water. One tab WILL kill aefw, IME it just took longer. Well......I think three days should do it and the fish will be fine! Once a week, for four weeks and you could be free as easy as that. I will try it in a few months but im too busy right now with other projects and the upcoming Christmas holiday.

Also when talking to him, he mentioned that Organicure is another product made by them that has very similar effects on monogeans so IMO it could possibly work. He said that it is a special type of copper in the form of cupric acitate and that it is 100% fish invert safe(actually designed for SW). I don't know about corals, but it's another possibility and I like possibilities :).

You're living on the edge over there, Borat. :D

Here's the Tyree frag today that was the original victim of these beasties and the reason for this thread.

:lmao: Yesssss!

For all it has been through, I think it looks pretty dang good!

I'm hoping so. I've not seen any indication there are any in the tank, but that is circumstantial at best.

How did you deal with them?

The first thing was to detemine if I had AEFW with a Lugol's test.

Next, I used Betadine. This was repeated two or three times over a couple of months. You'd have to reread this thread for more details.

Last dip was with Fluke Tabs. That was probably two weeks ago, if not more. Again, all that was documented in these pages. :)

During my treatment for AEFW today I noticed this strange looking F.W. Anyone know what kind it is? It was alive after a 45 minute fluke tab bath so I hope they don't eat acros.

Im still AEFW free, Havent seen a single one since my first Fluke tab dip which I believe was around 3 months ago. My corals have been out of QT and back in the display for around a month now and still no AEFW. I am positive that they are gone b/c I have seen the damage they do when you have them and my corals are not being attacked at all now. Glad to be AEFW free. I have heard some say that you can never be completely sure if you have them, just if you have had them or have not. I completely disagree with this b/c for anyone who has had them, they don't just hide out and wait...they eat your corals. Now if you have some gigantic 500gal tank and can't actually inspect each coral then yes, you have a chance of having them with out knowing but if your tanks small enough that you can inspect each coral daily, you can easily spot the signs of AEFW. They must eat to survive and reproduce so if you have them, it should be apparent. Melve only had a couple corals get attacked but he still noticed it out of his big ol tank, and it sounds like he was able to fend off the AEFW with targeted dips, not an entire tank QT which is awesome.:)
