My rimless 24"x24"x20" build thread

I've been working on setting up this tank for a few months now. It's still got a long way to go before it's up and running, but I figured I would post some pictures and get some feedback.

My plan was to have it up and running a long time ago, but I've since lost my job of 11 years and have been trying to find a new job, finish school, and become a stay at home dad. Let me tell you, none of those things are easy, as I'm sure some of you know.

I was out of the hobby for a while, but like most decided to get back into it. I wanted an all in one, so I went and got a 29g biocube. Well the first one began to leak from one of the seams immediately, so I took it back and got another one. The other one held water for about 12hrs before it began to leak from the very same seam!!!

So after all of that I decided to go a different route. I had WWC order me a custom tank from glasscages. Yes the silicone job is horrible, but other than that, the tank is in great shape. I still haven't cleaned it up yet, so these are the pictures as it sits today, the same as when I picked it up off of their truck a few weeks ago.

I've decided to build a custom stand with an attached canopy. The dimensions of the stand are 24"x30"x76", with the bottom of the stand being 38" from the floor. The bulk of it is done, I am in the process of making the molding now. It will have a base molding running around the bottom, then some built up crown running around the bottom of the tank and matching crown running around the top of the canopy.

The trim and color/finish of the stand are going to look identical to this one that I built for a friend.

This post is kinda long, so I'll finish on another one.

The sump was custom made, it is 22"x22"x16". It has a large chamber for my skimmer and a single sock/holder in the left rear of it.

The skimmer I chose to go with this time is an Octopus Extreme 160. I've also ordered the new purple pinwheel for the sicce pump, should have that in a few days or so.

I'm giving bare bottom a shot this time around so the tank will have a sheet of 3/4" black starboard on the bottom, notched out so it sits over the bracing that glasscages puts in the bottom of all of their tanks.

I'll also be using a reefkeeper to control all of my equipment.

As far as lighting is concerned, I'm putting in a single Lumenmax Elite reflector with a 250w galaxy ballast. Along beside it will be two T5's and in the front and back will be a strip of PowerBrite LED's.

My plan is to have a MP20 for water flow and a simple mag5 for the return pump.

That's about it for now. Look forward to hearing your thoughts and opinions on the setup.

Thanks!

I love that size tank. That is what I would like to upgrade to. The 24" is nice cause the t-5's are readily available either in a fixture or with a retro.

I have a lumenmax elite on a icecap 250 watt with a radium bulb, and 3 blue powerbirte leds over my biocube. It produces some sweet color and good growth in most everything.

Here is a better picture of the seam. A lot of what you see in the original is excess silicone.

Besides, it is a glasscages tank, and we aren't talking about perfection, but you can't tell me that's going to cause any problems. Nor was I willing to pay 2-3x's as much for it.

Just for giggles though, I did measure it and it's 1/32" off from one another after taking into consideration the silicone. I can live with it.

No kidding, if the job you lost wasn't fine furniture building, you certainly could make a living at it, beautiful!

How much did you pay for the tank, and don't exaggerate the price, give the exact price, plus your time and the gas/shipping you wasted to get it, then we can decide if it was a rip-off.

A bit demanding...

Wow, it sure didn't take long for this thread to start going downhill did it?

I stopped posting as much on here for this very same reason. It seems someone always has to do this.

Ski11lz, I can find fault with every tank, production built or custom built, including your very own I'm sure. Like I said originally, I knew I wasn't going to get the best quality around, and I knew I would get the tank with a crappy silicone job, but I still ordered it and am happy with it. Afteralll it is my tank, right?

However if you'd like to have a custom tank built by AGE or AO, feel free to do so and send it to me, I'll gladly accept it. And I can guarantee your wallet will be a lot thinner than mine at the end of the day.

Sorry about your JOB that sucks i hope you find something...But as far as the tank set up looks nice.Put up new pics..when all set up nice job

Chris nice work!
Very happy to see you back in the game. I believe you built my stand, 40 rimless 1" acrylic built for Charles(Cham) awhile back. Anyway, great work! BB, that is the route I ended up taking, much easier to control nutrients. Cannot wait to see it all setup!

Thanks Perry, yup I did build that one. How's it doing?

Going bb will definitely take me some time getting used to it, but I think I will enjoy it a lot more. No more worrying about the sand blowing all over the place, covering corals, etc...

I agree you do some great wood work. Keep it up. This is going to be a great tank.

Good luck on school and the job search.

Cheers,
Chris

Thanks for the compliments everyone. I plan on working on the stand tomorrow, so I should have some updated pics in the next few days.

Sweet chris , I was still wondering if you used that stand haha ..

And I already told you my AO story so yes the purchase of your tank was worth it .

I really have no clue why I didnt think about the canopy setup you are doing . *smacks forehead* Oh well haha.

I just had gotten done painting resanding and painting the stand you made me . In the morning I shall see the results :)

Good luck with your build sir
