my sick gigantea update/experience so far

Hi, guys, so I just wanted to share my experience w/people who are struggling to keep their sick giganteas alive and maybe people w/more experience can chime in.

About 2.5 weeks ago, I was at reefhotspot picking up a flame BTA when I noticed this small, very bleached gigantea with an open mouth. I've never kept gig's before, but I've done a lot of reading on them, and I figured I'd give it a try with this small "rescue" nem about 4 inches big.

My tank is a 56 semi cube gallon, set up for 1.5 years, with an island of BTAs, 250 watts of 14K MH with an OM squirt, 2 way--lots of flow at alternating currents so I thought it'd be an ideal environment to try to rescue this gig.

I have it down low in the tank, so as not to light shock it in its already bleached state. It attached immediately to a rock and has not moved at all since I've placed it there 2.5 weeks ago (good sign). I pointed the penductors away from it for a few days with lowered flow and gradually increased the flow to almost full blast within a course of about a week.

It's definitely not out of the woods yet. It appears still to be bleached, but I BELIEVE it is coloring up (not sure if it's all in my head though lol)

As for the mouth, sometimes it gapes HUGELY, sometimes just a tiny hole ... I find the mouth to be smaller more often now, so that's a good sign.

It DOES eat ... I squirt some Rods food on it ~ every 3 days, and it will definitely eat, although I just need to make sure that the bigger pieces of shrimp don't get to the tentacles, otherwise it WILL throw it back up about 30 mins later.

Foot seems fine, no dissolving or anything ...

So what do you guys think? Obviously, it's not out of the woods yet, still needs a lot of TLC, but I think it's got a fighting chance.

Will try to post up pics soon ...wish me luck on this guy! :)

I've had my gig for about a year now. I have noticed that it will not always hold its mouth super tight, but its never gaping. I'm starting to think that a little mouth gape is to be expected of larger anemones, and not necessarily a sign of doom for gigs.

Mine likes intense light, but will have stubbier tentacles if too bright. Usually raising or lowering the fixture a tad will dial it in. I have done well with 2 min on/ 2 min off of almost direct flow. Mine will also be huge after a feeding. I gauge feeding on whether I feel it has shrunk a tad, usually gets fed once a week, but only a pea sized amount.

I notice that RHS is having some very nice small Gigantea the last few days.
Anyway, I got my Gigantea for the last 4 months. See this thread:

I would star feeding small pieces and wait until it recover. High light and good current is what it needed, plus arrival to our tank healthy in the first place. The mouth of my Gigantea also not always tight. When ever I feed the fish and the food is in the water, the out open really wide to ingested even flake food that it caught.

Good luck
