My tank overhaul thread: stuff for sale, questions, status, etc.

In theory this is where I'm going to (more or less) document the overhaul of my tank. I'll post plans, questions, pictures, stuff I have for sale, stuff I'm looking for, etc.

Hopefully it doesn't get too chaotic in here, but I gotta start somewhere, so here we go.

Why am I doing this?
My tank started out as a fairly simple, fairly low budget/low tech build. A chance for me to get back into the hobby, but mostly for my kids. My kids love the tank, and I don't do much of anything half-assed, so my low budget/tech build has quickly become a prime example of what happens when you don't plan things out ahead of time.

I've got a pile of rock with frags stuck in every nook, left over zoa, shroom and xenia patches from back when I thought they were a good idea to have, and no real order to my tank. And that's just what you can see. Behind the tank and under the stand sits a disaster of PVC, wires, timers, filters, and other ill-placed things.

So this time around I'm going to do it right. At least as right as I can given the extent of my knowledge/experience in this hobby.

What's the first move?
Good question. I'm not entirely sure to be honest. I'm one of those people who like to have everything planned out and know everything ahead of time. I don't here, so this could get interesting.

But it seems to be that I need to unload some stuff before I can think about redoing anything. So lets start clearing things out.

For Sale (or possibly trade)
Pictures will be coming soon... my camera isn't cooperating tonight, but some pics can be seen here. More information available - just ask. I'm not really looking to make any money on these, but I gotta put some pricing on these so I thinking small frags will be $10, large frags will be $20, small colonies will be $30. If it's a particularly common coral, pricing may be a bit lower, if it's a particularly nice coral, pricing may be a bit higher. I can be flexible, especially if you're interested in a lot.

SPS:
- green cap - $10
- purple cap - $20
- green hydno - $20
- blue hydno - $10
- rose milli - $30
- unknown yellow frag - $10
- unknown plating coral (I think it's a scroll coral) - $20
- potato chip coral (2 frags) $10, $20

LPS:
- Green favia - $20
- tan/white tipped torch - $20
- orange plate coral - $20
- candy cane - $10

Softies/Polyps:
- toadstool - $10
- glue/green ricordia - $5
- lavendar/cream zoas - $10
- maroon zoas (similar to people eaters in coloring) - $10
- Xenia - free

Derasa Clam, approx 6-8" across - $50

LR
Probably about 25lbs or so (guessing). Several pieces will have zoas and/or mushrooms. Number and color of polyps varies. Pricing will vary on the rock, but consider it aggressively priced.

Tank/Lights
This is a package deal. 30g long (36x12x18) with a 4x39 Hamilton T5 retrofit fixture. I've got 8-10 bulbs of various color temp, all with less than 6 months of use. Tank is in decent shape, some scratches, but nothing painfully noticable, nothing that takes away from what's in the tank. Back of tank is currently painted blue. Not drilled. I'd like to get $150 for it all, mostly because of the lights. This is the one thing I don't really need to sell, but if I could get a decent price for it, then that's as good excuse as any to upgrade.

Other
- Eshopps PF-1000 HOB overflow box rated at 900gph. Works great - $50
- BRS 2 canister GFO and cabon reactor, I think I have some GFO left too - $25
- 12g Aquapod with stand and PC lights. I want it gone so any offer that makes it worth my time to drain will be accepted.

I think that's everything. Questions? Let me know. The Full Tank Shot on my site (linked above) will give you a sense of the size of everything. If anyone is overly concerned about sizes, let me know.

What else?
I think that's it at this point. I need a few things and would be happy to trade for them if things work out.
- pump for closed loop, approx 1000gph max
- small return pump for fuge, approx 200gph at 4' head
- once things move along a bit further I'll need some macro algaes

Stay tuned.

I think that the current tank is something to be pretty proud of. If you consider that a half asses attempt at reefing, I can't WAIT to see what's next to come!

I was surprised to see this post go up only after about two weeks from seeing your tank. I thought your tank looked pretty nice, but I can understand the want to do certain things over. Any idea what size tank you might be going to next? Whatever you decide to go with.. Good Luck on it and I hope it works out like you want this time.

I'll take the
rose milli - $30
orange plate coral - $20

I jut received my new dual reactor from BRS today :( Darn always a few days late...

Did the unknow yellow, (yellow porites) come from Nate Rogers? If not, I'll take it, if yes, I already have it.
Really great pics BTW.

Since the "emty out" phase is moving a bit faster than I anticipated, I suppose I should firm up my plans for moving forward.

Tank and Lights
If someone will take the 30 off my hands then I'll upgrade to a 45 (36x12x24). I have to stick with the same footprint, so the 45 is my only option unless I go custom, which I don't want to do at this point. Because of the depth of the 45 I'd probably upgrade the lighting to something like a 2x150HQI + 2x39 T5 setup.

If I keep the 30 then I'll keep my existing 4x39w T5 retro kit.

Flow and Filtration
Currently I've got an Eshopps HOB overflow box that feeds a 10g sump. There is a HOB Eshopps skimmer and a mag 9.5 return pump. The plan is to drill the tank for 2 bulkheads (either 1.5" or 2"). One will feed a closed loop powered by a Velocity T4 pump, the other a 10g fuge. Not sure on the return pump for the fuge just yet, perhaps a mag 5, but still working on that. I'll keep the HOB skimmer in the fuge, just gotta figure out the best way to deal with bubbles (both from the skimmer and from the drain.

Livestock
This is sure to change more than once, but here's what I know so far...

Critters
- Maroon Clown
- Midas Blenny
- Cleaner Shrimp
- Typical CUC
- maybe some sort of sand sifter

Corals
- Orange Cap (keeping from my current tank)
- Green Cap w/ red polyps (forget the name, from my current tank)
- Green Hammer (from my current tank)
- Blastos (from current tank)
- Pearl Bubble (from current tank)
- Pink Stylo (from current tank)
- Purple Maxima clam (from current tank)
- a few nice zoa colonies
- an acan or two

I've always wanted to try an austrailian elegance, but they are pricey for something I'm not sure I could manage. Might add a couple more clams depending... A lot of it will depend on the rock work and how much room I have.

So that's my plan as of now. Stay tuned for more.

Sorry, I tried to find the PM, but perhaps I'm having some issues today. LMK. I can pick up Saturday.

Thanks!!!

The candy cane and teh toadstool are yours. The toadstool is growing on a piece of LR, so you'll get that too. That's about all the LR I have left.

Saturday works, just let me know what time.
