My thoughts on the Vortech pump!

The Gen2 is no louder or quieter then Gen1. The wetside is not what makes the noise. It is the dry side (motor).

I will say that mine are not quiet (once they get over 75%). But, it is definitely up to the individual to decide if they can live with the noise. I run my two on reefcrest and it does not bother me at all. (They are the loudest part of my tank). I would buy more of them if I had the $$ :)

Transferring no heat to the tank is a big bonus.. I do not need a chiller on my tank. The house A/C keeps the tank temperature right where I want it.

I wonder does it matter on the tank's material? My buddy have two on his AGA; and it is extremly quite. (that is why I brough them) On my TruUv; you can hear the humming noise from the other side of the room. Drive me crazy :eek1:

I send one in for the Gen2 Upgrade; hope that will do the trick

Not to hijack thread, but do you run them on opposite sides of tank or does anyone run one or more on same side?(Trying to keep noise as far away from living room as possible)

Well by gen 2 i meant with the magnet upgrade. Are you running the new magnets? The upgrade comes with new magnet, wetside base, screw and washer I believe. I understand that the noise is coming from the dry side but was hoping that the mag upgrade would make the dry side run smoother with less resistance? I am still waiting for my magnets so will find out soon i guess.

I upgraded both of my vortechs to Gen 2 so I am using the new magnets, base, screw & washer. I have both of mine on opposite sides of the tank running in anti-synch reef crest mode.

They are not silent or advertised to be that way. If I ran them at say 80% power they would be silent, but I do not mind having them crank up to 100% since the noise level is not that bad to me.

I have 2 on opposite sides of my 90. I run them somewhere btwn 50%-75% (I vary), and it is not silent. It really depends on how loud the rest of your system is. I can hear them from the next room but by "hear" I don't mean its a deafening roar. You just know they are on. Doesn't bother me. Also depending on the mode you are in, the intensity will cycle so at times you won't hear it but when it ramps up you may. All that being said, I really like them.

I could hear my 2 seio 1500's on the multicontroller ramping up and down, and that didn't bother me. I couldn't get my mj 900's with sure flow 1600 mods quiet enough. With the canopy fans, skimmer, overflow, etc. my tank is not silent, but hums, gurgles and burps. I heard the mp40 at LFS, but too much background noise.

does anyone know if there is any kind of noise isolation material that can be used to construct some sort of cast to cover the dry side to make it more quiet? doable?

I've got the Gen I model w/out the wireless and when I crank it up past about 75% it gets fairly loud, but anything under that is really quiet. I generally only really crank it up a couple of times/week just to blow detritus up and around to try to get it moved into my sump.

I don't know about ReefN, but I'm pretty sure mine is lined up correctly. It might just be that everything else on my tank is so quiet. It's definitely a lot louder than my Koralia 3's and the Mag 12 driving my skimmer, but it's also putting out a lot more flow than any of those.

LOUDER THAN A MAG 12?? Well your pump has some problemm than.

Just a follow up.. Have to agree with jgillard. Just did the gen2 upgrade with the magnets and made no difference in noise.

I wish they would get these pumps working good. I like the idea, but between the noise and the problems I just dont think they are there yet,, Maybe Gen 3?. Seems like for every 3 people that like them you have 2 others with problems. Tunze are ugly but they just work..
