My thoughts on the Vortech pump!

I just ordered a vortech pump and I would like to tell people that might be interested in it what I think about it. I would have to say I am overall happy with it but it is not ideal. With all the maxi jet mods I had in my tank. Four over all. I am down to just one left in there now having this pump. The amazing thing is the temperature reduction in my tank. My tank is 300 gallons and in the winter it would not go below 80. Now in the summer my tank is at 78 with all the lights on. I am selling my chiller because of this pump. The only draw back is the noise. It is not silent on full blast. It is silent up to about 75% power though. If you have a small tank and can get away with not running it full blast it would be ideal. If you have a monster tank and need to crank it up expect a little noise. Also the flashing light on the controller is a little annoying but I am going to cover it up with electrical tape once I get another vortech and dial them in together.

I just got a Vortech myself a few days ago and also did not expect so much noise at full blast. According to the instructions, though, the noise is supposed to decrease after a break-in period (about a week, if I remember correctly). I currently have mine in the "reef crest" mode, so it's not at full blast most of the time anyway.

Are you sure it's lined up right?
Mine is also quiet I hear the overflow but not the vortech and it's up full blast.

I don't know about ReefN, but I'm pretty sure mine is lined up correctly. It might just be that everything else on my tank is so quiet. It's definitely a lot louder than my Koralia 3's and the Mag 12 driving my skimmer, but it's also putting out a lot more flow than any of those.

Even when lined up correctly, the external motor is about 45-50 decibels. Not a big deal if you have moderately noisy setup, like skimmer, fans, return pumps, etc. But it is VERY noticeable on a very quiet/silent setup- its a fairly steady "whirring" sound.

I found them to be unacceptably loud. I have a very quiet system and could not stand the noise. I went back to the Tunzes.

there was one on a tank at the lfs I uses to work at. It was quite loud at anything over %50 power or so. I would not have wanted that in my living room.

Quiet is arguable on opinion. Silent is another thing. They are definantly quiet but not silent. If the motor was in the water it would be dead silent. I just dont think you can engineer a pump to be quiet outside the tank and be that small and powerful. The heat issue though is amazing and my chiller running was way louder and turned my room into a hot desert. If I had a silent tank they would be too loud for me but I do not. I think I may just do more of them and turn them down so they are silent. It boils down to low profile and no heat, but have a little noise. Or big bulky and add heat with no noise.

Over the noise of my PS, return pump, overflow, light fixture fans... the Vortech is not noticeable.

I suppose if your system is silent, then you would notice it.

Do you have the gen 2 pump?

I would not call them quiet, never mind silent when I could hear them in the next room 15' away. The noise of the dry side alone was very annoying. The added noise of the wet side just made it that much worse.

I have a basement sump. No return pump or skimmer noise is audible. A few very quiet fans for the T5 lighting is all.

Yeah they are not silent but for me acceptable. Flow wise they are awesome. Look into the gen 2 magnet upgrades. I have not done it yet but they supposedly will make them quieter. Will be doing mine hopefully this week.

I find it odd that some people say they are quiet and some people say they are loud. I wonder if this has to do with different people's tolerance level of noise or if there's a big difference in the actual pumps themselves.
I have two tunze 6100 in my tank and one mp40w and when the vortec goes up to full blast, you can definitely hear it at least 10' away. My tank is silent other then the vortec right now.
I like the look of them in the tank since they're mounted on the side walls and the two tunzes are on the back wall. I wanted to add another one to the other side wall but don't know if I can withstand the sound of two of these turning up full blast.
The tank is in my family room so when we watch tv, we either have to turn up the stereo real loud or turn down the vortec. lol

Yeah I think it is a matter of what one would consider acceptable noise and also how loud the rest of your system is. There is no doubt that you can hear the vortechs. The question is how much it bothers you.

As for adding a second vortech, I found that it actually lowers the noise since you do not have to run them as high as if you had only one. That was my experience.

A LFS has one on display.. At full throttle its to loud for me.. For the price I just don't think they should be that loud.. Whats the point in buying a 400 dollar pump that can move 3000gph if you can't stand the sound it makes over 50%. That makes it almost a 400 dollar Koralia 4 :(

Bump on the gen 2 question? Are the gen 2's any quieter that the gen 1's? I am in phx also(over 110 degrees yesterday) and don't want a chiller, heat vs noise?

I dont believe gen 2 will make it any quieter since they didn't change the motor on the outside which is what causes all the noise ramping up to full speed.
