My True Percs are breeding!!!

rcmania

Im So Confused!
After a few years of owning these pair of true percs, they have finally spawned. I caught them yesterday clowning around. I noticed the other day that the male wouldnt leave the anemone area to come eat. Yesterday I was walking by the tank and caught them.

I just ordered rotifers and rotifer food. Im going to go this weekend to grab a 10 gallon tank and a few air stones. The only issue I have is that I work nights and ill be working when they hatch. If its around 10 days until they hatch, it will be sat July 5th when they hatch. I may have to "cough cough yaaakkk cough". Anyways first attempt!!!!!!

they hatch in about 8 days, at least mine do.

I also work nights, which is why I place a ceramic bathroom tile in the area where they lay the eggs, this way I can remove them the day they will hatch before I go to work.

if this is their 1st time laying eggs I would just let them go and go for the 2nd batch, this way your more prepared and will have enough rotifers on hand.

Not to mention, I've noticed it's fairly common among first time breeders to consume their first batch?

I actually think this is at least the second batch due to the anemone was one the back side of the reef to split. The male was doing the same thing then and wouldn't come eat when feeding the tank. For next time if I place a tile in the breeding location, will they continue to breed or will there be a little hickup due to something new in the tank?

mine never stopped a beat from the time i put the tile in. just make sure to put the tile in after this batch hatches don't put it over the eggs.

Ok, today is day ten. I have the tank ready and two buckets full of rotifers.

try and put the air stone under the heater so no fry can rest on the heater, also take some electrical tape and put it around the light on the heater.

Ok, thanks shifty. I'll mivebthe heater to the back wall and turn it straight up and down, with the air stone under it. I have another issue is I'm at work. Now I plan on going home to get the fry out of my dt. About how long after lights out will they hatch? I also went ahead and turned my powerheads off.

Awesome! Well mine hatched!!! About 80% hatched before I had to leave back to work. I siphoned as many as I could. I think I got about 50 fry, rough guess. The funny thing is my cleaner shrimp eggs hatched tonight also.

Ok, I came back a couple hours later and the rest had hatched. I was able to locate and get about 16 more. No eggs were left. I have had one loss as of right now and that was in the first hour. Everyone else is swimming around. I ended up get a craps load of the baby cleaner shrimp. Guess they will become food for the fry as they get bigger?

congrats, I collected a bunch (didn't count) but never kept any. got way to many as it is now. just wanted to try out the vosslen fry catcher to see how well it worked.

the shrimp will most likely die before the fry get big enough to eat them

So today is day 15 and my clowns hatched another batch lastnight but I didn't take these due to not having another tank ready yet. In total I have lost 5 to 6 out of the last batch. They are eating live baby brine and I'm still putting rotifers in for the smaller babies. some are starting to show the first stripe like as seen in the picture below. As for the baby cleaner shrimp they are starting to turn red and doing pretty good also. But I think some of the larger baby fish have snacked on a few.

Day 21!! All babies have the first strip or is starting to get there first strip. I had a little setback with a pump for my water change system. Finally got that resolved so now i can do my regular water changes. My baby shrimp are still in the tank with the baby clowns and seem to be doing good also. The shrimp in the tank make cleaning a pain in the @&&. Im still feeding live baby brine with rotifers for those who are not as big as some. I still have a couple who seem to be a NEMO and are a little behind from the others.

Decided to harvest last nights hatch, caught over a 100 little swimmers. And how do you ask how I got this number. That's simple, 6 hours later I was able to count the dead as I pulled them out of the tank. :( I have about 15 left. Not sure what happened. I think the light was to bright. I don't know. So upset.
