My Ultimate Multi Mantis System(s)

No worries I was only playing:). It was reassuring that you seen nothing extremely flawed with buying it. I been itching to buy it since it was posted in the "where to buy thread".

Cool story about the Clown fish who lived to see another day. It makes me wonder.

The only downside to G.platysoma that I have READ about (since never owning one) is that they are "Not very interactive" they are just as hardy as the rest but in my eyes far more colorful/attractive (personally I want one xD).

In all honest I am after the more 'odd' / 'uncommon' species now days, after successfully keeping all that I have I want to start to branch out into the more weird types out there and give them a crack!

This evening I got to get another good shot of The Juggernaut as he is becoming a lot more interactive & inquisitive in nature, I am very happy that his shell rot has appeared to of all gone (although there may be trace elements left but with the next molt I am more then confident he will be shell rot free =D) I am specially happy about his telson (tail) as that was looking rather nasty...and its a key part of there defense against other stomatopods (something that should never happen in my care anyway).

Here is the big fella as of this evening - trying to keep the glass clean constantly uggh its the one thing letting me down -_- and wiping it causes him to retreat for a while so a loose the shot(s) lol (Note the sharded remains of a large mussel I fed him earlier on (quality to poor to produce ='[..).

Special note this evening goes to Morgoth my L.sulcata he has been giving me worry over the past month and a half being somewhat motionless, sitting in the same position in his burrow head totally exposed but body hidden within a 'partial burrow' I began to worry that he may not have it in him to recreate another large burrow (as I had read that large L.sulcata no longer have the ability to create a whole burrow, only to fix what they made when they were smaller). Nonetheless Morgoth pulled through although it took him a while he has now truly begun deep excavation within his portion of the tank.

The first time I have seen Morgoth this deep in his burrow hinting that he has truly begun excavation and has settled in/fueled up. Like the tip of an ice berg its hard to image the full size of these large spearers when only the eyes & antenna poke above the sand....adds to there eerie nature.

Confirmation that Morgoth is truly excavating and settled in, a window has appeared deep in the depths of the sand indicating a burrow.

More to come, Hopefully Morgoth makes huge windows like he did in the old original tank he was in last year =) as that made for some great photo opportunities!

Here are some more nice images I captured of The Juggernaut this evening I tempted him with the huge hermit tonight and he cracked it good but the hermit retreated for too long so I removed it and put it back in its sump so it could gorge itself on prawns ready for round 3 speaking of prawns the 2nd to pics I got in this set of 4 are just before I fed The Juggernaut some prawn meat, as SOON as the prawn flesh made contact with the water, he came out from behind his den to investigate it was surprising to see the instant reaction even though he couldn't see it...

First 2 of him rearranging his den.

These 2 are his reaction to the prawn flesh hitting the water...

Hope you like =D

So I am coming to terms with the glue needed to coat/smother PVC pipes in order to then smother/coat that PVC in sand to make it look more natural.

Would just a basic Silicon be ok ? Price is an issue considering the amount I need to do....

So far I am incline to just use silicon.

Indeed, your collection and video/photography keeps me coming back to this forum daily. Keep them coming!

Have you thought about trying Hot Glue for your sand/pvc? I've used it for building snail guards and it works well. Really nice not having to wait for it to dry.

I like to keep uploading pics / vids too since that was one of the primary goals of the whole setup (beyond providing the stomatopod with all its needs and wants).

It looks as through my L.maculata 'The Leviathan' may be nearing the end of his molt as last night he had his head poking out of the sand and was dumping loads of sand out of his burrow, the first time I had seen him in a week.

Morgoth on the other hand looks to be getting into a molt having totally sealed off his burrows entrance for a couple of days now.

I want to offer diversity in my pics / vids not just the same thing repeated.

Not sure about the hot glue stuff as I intend to be having my hands in it to smother etc I have never used a hot glue gun before....

Here are a few more pictures I managed to get today =)

Eve - Flippin' me the bird...

The Kraken - Wondering what all the commotion is about...

Rocky - Emerging from under his Acan encrusted live rock after being M.I.A. for a week, he has molted and looks distinctly larger.

Here is an interesting picture of Maximus and specifically, his telson, 2 nights ago Maximus molted and ever since then he has been munching on his old skin however all looks well beyond this 1 area...the Telson, perhaps its still 'hardening' I don't know or perhaps he is taking on a new color pattern (be exciting :D) none the less I am virtually positive it isn't shell rot (being a G.graphurus makes him a tough S.O.A.B found inter tidally where there is BRIGHT lights).

Any where here is his Telson as is of Today.

More to come (got some vids earlier just uploading them is all =D)

I am very happy you like my thread, I update it constantly so as to keep the viewers happy.

This entire thread is literally for you and others like you, I mean it is certainly NOT for me LOL...I am the one that owns the critters and see them 24/7 so I do not in theory need any of what I post =).

It's ALLL for you and people on here like you!

thanks for stopping in to check! :D

Bit of an update on my current build.

After much thought, I have decided to add another stand, obviously called STAND D...Ironically enough it will hold 'deepwater' species (D for deepwater LOL)...the intended species are Bathysquilla & Hemisquilla, however a coupel things to note about this stand that make it extra special. There will only be 2 tanks, the top tank will be the same as the bottom tank of STAND C (1200mmLx600mmHx150mmW) and will host the Bathysquilloids, the bottom tank is going to be more like the bottom tank of STAND B but slightly taller & longer (1200mmLx600mmHx300mmW) and will host the Hemisquilloids, both tanks will be split via dividers (permenant this time, like STAND A's). To note though, neither tank will be connected to each other, mostly due to the fact that the temperature differences for each species varies greatly (10-15degrees celceius), it is not something I am totally clear on yet but I do believe the H.australiensis occurs in deeper waters then H.californiensis, another reason why there is a lack of photos but it all hints to colder/darker environments. One good thing or at least something I can utilize in both tanks is the same substrate, being mud, something i have long wanted to toy with (EelFreak! =D) to add to this the stand is going to get a built in 'shade' something I can easily draw close when not viewing the tanks.

It goes to say that these will be lightless tanks and consideration is going into keeping them 'light free', all sides bar the fronts will be black through paint/acrylic sheeting but I also plan on doing something for the front, something I can easily open and close when viewing / not viewing.

Here is a generalized idea of how it would look, its a rough image at best.

More research will be undertaken before this is done as I have something else I want to do in the meantime =D.

.
.
As I mentioned earlier I had plans to aquascape STAND A (& the top tank of STAND B) due to the fact that those tanks are intended for smaller species capable of handling bright lighting environments, lighting will be upgraded (still LEDs but more powerful) so I can host coral within these tanks/compartments not to mention that but the PVC tubes I'll be
creating, (there is obviously going to be 1 test one first likely with Adam/Eve (G.smithii)). I have posted the plans for the intended 'pipe work' of PVC along with the corals I intended (hoped) to keep. Here is an image of how I hope it to end up =D

Note the SPS corals are NOT the exact ones intended but a variation of what I would like if its possible, its just a mere idea.

More to come as it happens =D

Been out of town so have not posted in a week or so. It looks like in the time I left you have decided to build in a sump to connect A, B, & C into one system, and your designing a new system incorporating mud as the main substrate. Did I miss anything else? WOW bro you’re taking this to even higher levels of mantis dependency. If I remember right no one has kept californiensis long term successfully. Looks like your defiantly braking new gowned. Are you still in the research faze on the mud? I am sure you will have some fun playing with different types. Have you contacted the Doc about what type of muds he finds these guys in?

I have contacted Dr. Caldwell (he was my first stop) and he did give me some useful information specifically that the Bathysquilla needs very cold water at around 5degrees celcius so just above freezing.... LOL

I am still in search for mud I would rather purchase some (even though it will be expensive) rather then dig my own up not knowing what nasties are in it...

I can at least say that both spearers are now in 'full swing' and actively predating again, last night was an extremely brutal and somewhat horrific visual display by Morgoth, its gruesome...so I am a bit hesitant about uploading that particular video...

I shall update tonight when I get home from work and will decided whether or not to make the film on Morgoth public...(had to mute the sound cause all you can hear is me screaming "HOLY F****** S***! HOLY F****** S***! HOLY F****** S***! HOLY F****** S***! HOLY F****** S***!" I just keep saying it lol xD (which made me laugh as I re-watched the raw footage).

Morgoth really showed his darker side...
