My Ultimate Multi Mantis System(s)

It's a delicate subject simply because the law is 'clear cut'...

It is illegal to feed/sell live animals for the purpose of them being preyed upon and consumed by another animal.

Goldfish recently got banned/reinforced and now pet stores here are not allowed to legally sell them as goldfish, pet stores will also refuse to sell a person (myself) a live animal if they have a strong feeling that it will be fed to another creature.

My LFS recently picked up on (through the talking of my friend that works there) that I am (was now) purchasing cheap live fish from the store in bulk supply for the sole purpose of feeding them to my stomatopods, the manage confronted me and told me that she has instructed the staff to not sell me any live creature (besides coral, either way, I took it hard and have not been back).

It's unfortunate simply because the only people that actually kick up a fuss about this on the local (Aus) forums lay out (private) threats about sending my footage to the government for them to 'deal with'.

So I am in 1 way just making my grave deeper and deeper with each video I make and allowing more and more evidence of my 'animal cruelty' to be put forward.

I have not responded to this latest 'attack' I have not updated that thread yet either...to make matters worse this particular individual not only has in depth stomatopod knowledge (having sold me 4 of my first...Adam & Eve (G.smithii) / Minnie & Maximus (G.graphurus)...), he has also been somewhat the only person on that forum that continues to 'challenge' me on my stomatopod presentations/posts, all my information given is either first hand watched/learned experience or something literally copy and pasted direct from someone like Dr.Caldwell and other figure heads of the stomatopod research world.

It's the very very few that as always, ruin it for the rest...

Probably the same people making that law as the ones who killed Rodney Ansell because he wouldn't give them his guns. Amazing how liberals can be so hypocritical. They will pass a law forcing great whites to be vegans next.

Heh, while I agree with you about 90%, you live one state too far north if you're hoping to avoid nanny-state legislation.

Oh I know. I was very apprehensive about moving here but it was a step up for my wife with her career. I already miss the great western mountains and deserts.

Haters gonna hate! :)

A video dedication to the very few local people on local forums (aus) that ruined the future experience for many others that followed me on those forums....

A few random images of late...

Here is the school of 'scats' swimming around with Minos (L.colemani) sitting slyly under them...

Every then again Minos (L.colemani) targets and strikes for a fish that strays to close / away from the group, so far his success has been limited...

Here is an Oyster Blenny inhabiting a piece of Poly Pipe that I had originally intended for Minos (L.colemani) however the spearer refused to inhabit it...the blenny loves it.

Here is another Oyster Blenny this time in Eves (G.smithii) compartment, in this pic the Blenny has coiled itself around the inside rim to the highest blocked entry/exit door to Eves home, not the wisest place to sit...having said that this blenny has excavated a small cave in the substrate and swiftly darts into it at the first sign of danger, Eves emergence...

The Kraken (O.scyllarus) eyes the camera...

The Juggernaut (O.scyllarus) begins to creep forward...

More to come :D

That's quite possibly one of the most ridiculous laws I've ever heard in my entire life.

So it's effectively illegal to keep almost any sort of pet herp, or any animal that requires live prey? Do the same rules apply to farmers slaughtering animals for consumption by other animals (such as us)? Selling chilled mollusks in the supermarket?

Talk about Big Brother... sorry you have to deal with that sort of nonsense :-/

and how many videos are up on youtube alone with lionfish being fed, catfish being fed, sharks being fed? thats simply ridiculous, saying a natural part of nature is illegal? thats insane. So, now that you have them, you're gonna have to starve them for the sake of these idiots... but then you'll have other animal rights activists screaming about how you're starving them? this world really is full of morons.

side tangent: whos up to try and figure out how to keep and bread silversides in captivity? lolz.

Whilst I enjoy reading all these comments that boost my courage (P.S. I am NOT going to stop what I am doing...) one must remember that "Law is Law" and it's as 'cold cut' as that....

The simple fact that I place the fish within the tank personally incorporates a non-realistic environment/act after all if it isn't for my intervention none of the victims would of been victims in the first place...everyone that knows stomatopods knows they can live happy full healthy lives (both smasher and spearer) on pre-killed prepared food like silversides and prawn meat etc. etc.

If anything I could turn around to activists who are aggressive towards me and my videos and simply state that the fish going into these tanks are meant to be display animals for the purpose of enjoying and maintaining their health, if they happen to get killed by another inhabitant that is beyond my control...BUT...my videos don't help that simply because many are very specific a.k.a "FEEDING such n such" which means that the video was intended and premeditated for the killing and consumption of the live fish.

Australia is VERY frustrating for those who love unique animals (not cats, dogs & birds...) we are 1 big giant WHORE of a country, we won't keep anything for ourselves, many creatures found within Australia are illegal to keep as pets in Australia... yet they can be exported to other countries to be kept as pets by residence in that country.

In one hand the gov says they don't permit us to keep exotic creatures in fear of them going extinct/endangered and on the other hand the gov says they will export the exact same exotic creatures to other countries because of (x)....pathetic!

Try getting help on the subject and your in for months of "I'll pop you on hold for a 'sec' and transfer you to 'x' department, Mr./Mrs. 'X' can help you" only for Mr./Mrs. 'X' to say they cannot help you but "I'll pop you on hold for a 'sec' and transfer you to 'x' department, Mr./Mrs. 'X' can help you" and it goes on and on... They will not give reasons as to why "this/that" law is in place all they will say is exactly what you already know and are ringing up to question..."It is illegal to 'X' in Australia, anything else I can help you with ?".

I'm ranting and will stop now... lol

Going to be a bit of a Picture Overhaul tonight, which I shall split up into separate posts...

Up first are the O.scyllarus (with some more to come of them again...).

KRAKEN

JUGGERNAUT

More to come...

Up next is MORGOTH (L.sulcata) who has shown significant growth over the past 2 years since I got him (2-2.5inchs+ growth in length).

More to come...

Here is something that has really made me happy :)...MINOS (L.colemani) has started to become much more comfortable with his surroundings for 2 reasons...Firstly if you remember a week or so back I added a school of a dozen small 'scats' into his compartment in order to keep them safe from the much larger and more aggressive spearers etc.

I can confirm 100% now that he has actually predated and killed on his own a live fish as I caught him with the fish still alive but pinned by the much larger spearer, ashamed I missed recording it but I'm just happy he is starting to 'hunt'.

Finally as a further confidence booster he has started to really build a burrow and in the same place he has since being in the compartment, time will tell if he completes it but things are starting to look really good for him.

More to come soon.

Large body of water = more stable parameters and imo you would most definitely need a skimmer, mantis are super messy eaters because they bury food.

Not sure where that came from o_O lol...but I agree with the Large Body of water = more stable parameters however as far as stomatopod 'requiring' a protein skimmer that is far from the truth...I have had these stands up and running for over a year now without the use of skimmers or any real equipment besides powerheads for flow and very large external canister filters.

Burying food is something else I have actually yet to experience and I have many stomatopods hence the chance should be very high that I encounter it, all my spearers have specifically removed the uneaten food from their burrows after having their fill thus allowing it to sit on the sand bed a few inches from their burrows entrance and easy for me to remove from the tank.
