My wood tank build

I've found a glass source. Does $1200 for 96x30 Starphire 3/8" laminated to 3/4" delivered and installed with my supply of silicone sound OK (keep in mind I'm in the sticks)? I guess this might be a rhetorical question since it's the only source of low iron glass I can find.

I do recall a thread that suggested low iron glass might not be all it can be (not worth it). Any input before I pull the trigger?

Thanks

why so thick?? It's only 30" tall and you are going with 1 1/8" Glass? I would think that 3/4" would be fine.

this is just me trying to remember somthing that i've read...but the term" starfire" is a patented term by PPG. so other companies can't call it that. but low iron glass is low iron glass. the combinations of sand to iron is within 5-10% which makes that amount not noticable to the naked eye.

many tank builders like to use the starfire name because it allows them to charge a higher price for the glass.

again this is somewhat off of memory.

Yes but there are differences of low iron glass I am sure there are some that are as good as starfire but then I know there are some that are not as I had seen them and if you look at the difference in starfire and regular glass it is huge and well worth the little increase.

King are you talking me or Del? I live in TN and Del lives in CO I have a brother in CO so I follow the boards.

Sounds a bit expensive to me Del,

I paid about 750 CAD, for 3/8 lam to 3/4 starphire 96x30.

But im unsure of how far the delivery is, aswell as the caulking..

Marc.

Well, I found 2 more local (sort of) sources today. They are working on prices. Jeff, I meant to say 2 pieces of 3/8' laminated to give a single piece 3/4" thick.

Wayne-I looked at Glass Cages and I think the shipping would kill me but I might get a quote anyway. The nice thing about local is they will deliver and help me set it.

Maybe it's so expensive here because of the altitude treatment all our glass gets.

I have a question on the bulkhead gasket thingy..
Over here in good ol blighty, We say that u should get rid of the rubber gasket on the bulkheads, because a lot of people have had problems with the rubber perishing and invariably leaking.
Are american ones made of a different material?

mike.

Samson*****thanks, my fingers are crossed.
And please, don't forget NYPD, Port Authority PD and civilians. I saw many of them leave the "pile".

leetdood (Mike). If I removed the gasket, the thing would leak for sure since the solid material of the bulkhead would be against the solid surface of the tank. The only way that would work is if both surfaces were perfectly smooth and perfectly flat. The gasket is what makes the seal. So, here in the New World, we keep the gasket in, hand tighten the outside nut, give it another 1/2 turn with a wrench (spanner) and as you would say "Bob's your uncle".

I've never had a bulkhead leak (touching wood now).

What we do with the bulkhead is apply lots of silicon in place of the gasket. as you probably know, when you insert the bulkhead, there is a gap between the sides of the bulkhead and the side of the hole(the inside edge, not the flat surface, not akin to puting ur finger in an eggcup, note the space between ur finger and the sides of the cup.. That is all filled with silicon when teh BH is tightened up.
I'd hate for u guys over there to start having leaks on all ur BH's because of the rubber perishing.
Just a headsup. ;-)

mike

Sounds like you are substituting silicone for the OEM gasket. I have considered filling the space between the sides of the bulkhead and sides of the hole with silicone. I have not considered the gasket "perishing". Not sure why it might unless you run copious ozone.

I've no idea.. it's just happenened over here quite a lot.
Maybe something to do with the rubber not being proper rubber or something. i've no idea.
But anyway..
Great tank!! keep the pics coming. ;-)

mike.
