Nano advice & Stuff for sale...

Due to significant travel for work, I have finally accepted that keeping my 125 is too much for me to do an adequate job.

I am looking to downsize and keep a few items in a new ~29g nano. My research has me between the Oceanic HQI & the JBL 89w LED. I am leaning towards the JBL due to the LED lighting options but am a bit leery since there doesn't seem to be a simple skimmer option. All feedback appreciated.

I have some fish, rock, and sand I have had for many years. What I'd *like* to keep:

7/3/03 Flame Angel (on the edge if the nano can handle). Advice?
3/20/04 Royal Gramma
9/13/03 Yellow Clown Goby

To send to a new home (purchase dates listed):

7/3/03 Purple Tang (Pretty big; ~5" long and very healthy): $75
10/18/03 Green Chromis (5 about 2.5" long (big)): $30 for all (must go as a group)

Hardware & Stuff:

125 tank with custom sump. I hard plumbed everything so I'll need to cut the lines to the sump to get it out of my house. After I do that, I will determine if it's worth selling and put a price on it. I don't think it will be an issue but will hold off on listing until I am certain.

Lighting -- 72" Hood "“ Three 250 watt MHs and two 160 watt VHO actinics (electronic ballasts on all). One MH ballast needs repair. $200. Four brand new 72" VHO UVL Super Actinic R in box, never opened. $100.

Substrate "“ 300 pounds of Southdown plus 50 pounds of live sand. Free.

Live Rock "“ 225 pounds of Florida live rock (Gulf View & Tampa Bay Saltwater). $5 per pound. I plan to keep 30 pounds for the nano.

Bottom line is I want a good home for some old friends. I can be reached here or by cell or text at (716) five-seven-zero - 6149.

personally I like the jbj better it just seems like a higher quality tank. There are options for skimmers I personally used a cpr bak pak as a hob skimmer.

You can fit a tunze 9002 into the center section of the jbj, if that kelps you. The LED version also has a very 10k look. If you like the look of a 14-20k you will need to supplement actinics. Stunner strips would work great.

+1

I currently use a CPR bak pak on the sump for my 10 gallon nano. Works like a charm. Much better to get a skimmer that's rated for a much bigger tank.....it makes a HUGE difference in water quality for small tanks, IME.

I just got a JBJ28 CF and could not me happier with the quality of the tank. Like said above the Tunze 9002 skimmer fits in the back, but you will need to also pick up the smaller skimmer cup for that skimmer from Intank.

IMO the 125 seems like it would be allot less upkeep than a nano other than emptying the skimmer and doing top offs they will pretty much run on auto pilot for a very long time.

+1 on that! my 12gallon nano was a lot more work than my 40 gallon breeder, not much room for error.

I have had several tanks, varying in size. I even built an entire SW section at a fish store once. I now have a 26 gallon and even though I go back and forth about whether or not to keep it, a smaller tank is so easy to maintain compared to a 120+ system.

In fact I just took my tank down and "refurbed" it. It was reef ready with a drain on the bottom in the back corner. I took out the overflow and siliconed a piece of plexi over the holes and switched to a hang on skilter. Much less space needed and much less noise. I believe that with anything under 40g, you just dont need a skimmer. Just do your weekly water change and you're good.

I'm sure that you will love having a nano. Sure, you will always want to get a bigger tank, but there will be at least 10 times when you think to yourself how nice it is not to go through 5 gallons of water a day.

I wouldn't mind grabbing a piece of live rock from you. I only need one about the size of a football, give or take.

Thanks for all of the replies. I know there are +/- on downsizing. Appreciate the input. Pretty set on the JBJ 89w and adding a couple Stunners as suggested.

I've had a few interested in the Purple Tang. I'll get a picture in a few hours when the lights are on. I would prefer he go to someone with a six foot setup. I think he'd do OK in a four foot but he does love to roam a lot...

No one interested in the chromises? They are pretty big. I'll snap a picture of them as well.

i had a potters in my 28 for about 2yrs?. i don't think i'd do it again. my 28 jbj hqi was sloppy, really bad build quality overall. the hqi is a hooker with the heat. for the price of a cube, you could do a nice cube with a sump. i have a remora hob /decent but not great IMO. jbj doesn't really seem to be able to make a stand alone product that's worth buying. it's more of a bundle of mediocre parts. the aio are best if you keep it really simple and understocked. i've never one that i was blown away with. i'm ready to scrap my jbj and go led/RRcube/sump route.

An OK picture of the Purple...

interested in the Chromis. Can you snap a pic... How long have those guys been together?
I'll take the 4 72" actinic VHO's for sure.

My log has the chromises introduced together on 10/18/03. Here is an OK picture... They are blueish green. They do lay eggs but the flame angel turns them into a nice snack immediately.

OK on the VHOs. I am in East Amherst but drive trough Rochester (thruway) every other Monday.

125 break down has begun... Again, all advice accepted. I put it up ten years ago, but have never taken one down.

Draining 25 gallons into a new garbage can to move the rock to temporarily. Will heat and keep aerated.

I will end up with a lot more rock than I need. If anyone wants any; $5 per pound. I should have a pretty good amount available next weekend.

email = reefcentral at koszela dot com or phone # in initial post above.

Update on the stuff for sale:

Purple (Sold) -- Cuch (Should be able to catch next weekend)
Chromises -- Interest from Gary M. (Should be able to catch next weekend)
Four brand new 72" VHO UVL Super Actinic R in box (Sold) -- Gary M. Available anytime.
Rock -- Ryan wants one the size of a football. I will have a few to chose from, I am sure.

The sand is true Southdowns. I'll only need 40 pounds or so. If anyone wants any, it's free for the taking. Otherwise it will just end up spread on my lawn...

Not much interest on the hood. It needs work. The VHOs work great. MH ballasts are showing their age. May be a good DIY project with LEDs.
