Nanobox?

Hey guys,

Anyone in the area (city or west burbs for me) using a nanobox fixture? Please don't reply telling me that they are expensive and I should do a DIY from Bill at reef led lights. I know that resource is there but want to see the nanobox in person and get some thoughts from someone that has been using one.

Thx!

i never heard of this light. is it a diy type light? searches bring up disassembled units. Those rebel leds look pretty good.

Yeah, I think I ran across it on another forum. Name is kinda hard to search and get good results too. Still fishing for anyone locally that has one.

Never seen one in person but I have heard good things. People were using them over EcoPicos with good results.

Thanks Ted. Where were you reading about that? I'd love to read those threads because my application is basically the same, 6.6 gallons so just slightly bigger than the EcoPico. I'm thinking you could easily do sps with that light over a 12x12x12.

I just received 2 of the Duo's. They're over my new 90 gal. tank. I can't comment on their ability to grow anything but zooanthids at this point as I just added my live rock yesterday and don't have any other corals in there yet. The colors look great to me, though.

Dave Fason is working on new controllers, so I only have on-off through a timer at this point. There are dials that can be used to manually adjust the brightness - 2 each for whites and blues (or four per light).

I haven't even figured out a way to hang these yet. Right now, they're just sitting on top of a few pieces of wood that I have spanning the top of the tank. The units are pretty small, but give out great light.

Thanks for sharing! Good to hear at first blush you seem pleased with them. I have been in touch with Dave via email and plan on buying a mono box once he has the new controller ready to go. Any other thoughts on them?

Have any details about this controller-in-development ever been shared? I keep seeing it mentioned on forums. There isn't much info on the website for the existing products being sold either..

I just asked Dave for an update on the controller earlier today. I have not received a response, but will forward information once I receive it.

I bought the lights with the understanding that the controller would be released very soon.

prototyp3: I agree with your assessment of the web site. I only felt comfortable with the product after trading messages with Dave.

Hey guys, I have some high level details via e:mail. Just don't feel like taking anything out of context and am not at my PC. Also, I want to make sure Dave is cool with me disclosing them here first. I'll check tomorrow and post what i have once I hear back from him. Dave is great and I have mentioned via e:mail exchanges with him that he should be more forthcoming with specs./pics. on the website. I know he is working on a number of great things and believe an update to the website is forthcoming. He posted on Facebook earlier this month about it.

I mentioned that the name Nano Box doesn't lend itself to very clean search results on forums where search engines don't do well with terms like nano. He said he recognized the issue and hence the names mono box and duo box for the two lights. Does anyone know how to insert an and statement using the RC search function ( e.g. "nano" and "box" in the thread title only). Search for threads with both terms in the subject only?

He used the term "underground" to describe how he has been operating to a degree. I think I might blow his cover and start a "Nano Box - Mono Box / Duo Box Owners" thread once I get mine. :-) Hope he doesn't mind.

Exchanged messages with Dave today, he asked if I would hold off on posting what I know for now so I will do that for him. Some nice improvements for sure.

Look for an official announcement maybe next week on the reef site that has a name very similar to Reef Central.

I've been in touch with Dave as recently as tonight, I'm thinking of going from MH to LED's. Seems like a nice guy, he's had some good reviews else where. I'm still undecided but thinking hard about going to some kind of LED system.Hopefully others who own his lights will chime in.

Well, I pulled the trigger today. I am going with the new Mono Box w/ Controller Dave is releasing soon over my 6.6 gallon cube. The controller on the new models is integrated as part of the fixture. Looking forward to getting it over the tank! I am also purchasing an older version of the Mono Box with the manual controllers for my coral QT.

On Monday, Dave posted that the controllers were supposed to be in this week. I have sent him 2 PMs requesting an update, but have not heard anything back.

Yes, I am waiting and am totally cool with that for the time being. I'd rather wait and let Dave do it the way he wants than be the annoying guy pestering him every other day for updates. I know he will get them done as soon as he can. I don't think I've ever waited more than 24 hrs to hear back from him.

Looking forward to getting my hands on it.

jmsalt, your patience is commendable.

However, as a customer, I don't feel it is annoying to expect a response within a few days of asking a question. My experience has been different than yours - I've had 2 occasions where I never received any response.

I'm also not 'pestering him every other day'. The fact is that I've been waiting 3 months for these nanobox controllers to be released. In February, when I purchased my units, Dave told me that these controllers would be 'released soon'. I don't consider 3+ months to be 'soon'.
