Naso Tang

Looking for some advice on feeding a Naso Tang. I added one to my tank 4 days ago and have yet to see him eat. I have tried brine shrimp plus, pellets, flake, spiralina and seaweed select all with no luck. The fish is acting normal, not stressed at all; just swims around all day looking fine but I have never seen him eat. I have had some algae buildup on some of my rocks; maybe he is nibbling on that; although I have never seen him do it. I am at work most of the day so dont have a clue as to if he is eating algae during the day. I have also noticed that when he was first added to my tank his stomach seemed empty and now had some fullness to it so he must be eating something..a little confused. Any ideas as to trying different foods that may work? All water levels are excellent. Thanks for any help.

just give the fish some time some take longer to adjust to new surroundings than others. also you can try to soak the food in garlic before feeding it will atleast get them interested (well in my experience) even if the fish doesnt eat it will swim into the area hang around for a bit

and before someone elses says it... hope you dont plan on keeping the naso in the 55g long term

clip some of the seaweed sheets on the side of the tank he will eat them.Also remember what Asuran said about keeping him for any length of time Naso are very pretty fish but they really need atleast a 300 gal tank. If he does not start eating soon take him back because he could be too stressed in your tank and just needs more room Good luck Scott

Thanks, I knew the tank size responses were coming but I have had success in the past with tangs in my 55. My water quality is always pristine and the tangs I had in the past have adapted very well for the tank size. I will give the garlic a shot; thanks for your advice.

oh yeah forgot to ask would there be a chance of a tankmate giving the naso a hard time? sometimes that might cause fish not to eat initially as well.

nope; no one is bugging or stressing him. the naso came in and took over. I only have niger trigger and tomato clown; once the Naso came in he right away became the big cheese

What do yall think of the Nasos? In my 200g i was looking for a good nice looking large fish to put in there and i was really wanting to go with a naso or a powder blue. any comm. about adding one of these fish?

My naso was by far my favorite fish. very smart and good nature
with other fish.
Lost him after 7 years.
I would love to have another, but my tank is only 90 gal. and with
all the live rock I've added it just wouldn't fair to the fish.
Just not enough room to swim.
IMO 55 is way too small

You have a naso and a niger trigger in a 55 gallon. I hope you are planing to upgrade soon.

What happen to all the tangs you had in the past, die form old age?

While there are SOME tangs that might be ok in a very OPEN 55 (hardly any live rock, not many fish). . The Naso is like the KING of tangs. .

I have a 55 too, it's 4 feet by 12 inches. A Naso tang's natural full size is 1 FOOT and 6 INCHES. The 12 inches of width doesn't even give it room to TURN AROUND. .

I don't even plan a naso for my 125. I think a Naso needs like a 180 at a bare minimum. You've gotta find him a new home or bring him back. I can guarantee you that tang will not live more than 2 years in your tank. And their natural lifespan is like more than 20.

Not only the poor tang, have you ever seen a full grown niger trigger?

You have over two feet of fish in your four foot tank.

No I haven't. Maybe someday I will if I ever have a 300 or something. .

Those 2 fish, those are the types of fish that we spend 1000's of dollars on larger tanks so we can GET fish like that.

You can add Romaine lettuce with a magnet thing, like I see at the l.f.s.
