i have both

they get mildly hot
im glad you put that fan in there

and only about $3 more
they would probably fit into your setup
they are suppost to be 9" from top to bottom
but i measured mine and my 20 watters were only 7" long and 2" across
i have a self made fixture with 2 20's and 2 10's
a total of 60 watts over my 10g
so far i only have mushrooms and i am going to see how they do before putting anything else in

hey guys i got the tank set up today. lr and water in. i vought a little power head and a diffrent fan. i also replaced the blub with a 20wtt funny cause i didnt read this before i replaced it!

i got 10 lbs of rock in there the filter, heater,power head, lights and fan are all working great. i have the chemi pure and macro algae in the filter. theres so much life on the rocks lots of macro algaes, feather dusters and pods all over the place.
again questions,suggestion and comments are wanted.

i like this tank. im curious as to if you will have any heat issues what with the back of your canpoy not being open. i also agree about a backround. i dont think the color matter much, on my tank you can hardly notice it because of the coraline, i think black would look nice because it would make you focus on your corals better. i also really like the aqua scaping, its impressive for the limited space you have in a 5g

The order is ammonia - nitrite - nitrate. After the ammonia peaks the nitrate should peak, then the nitrates. At this point you ideally have zero ammonia and nitrites but elevated nitrates.
Although in theory the live rock helps reduce nitrates, water changes do it a lot better and faster.

Billy-You said mag floats scratch tanks this small? I didn't know that could happen, do you think if I have mine on my 14 gallon biocube it'll be okay?

It's not just becuause it's small because it is still glass. However, in a small tank the top of the sand and the top of the tank aren't that far apart and if you get to close to the sand it gets kicked up and then it scratches. It's just my experience. If you have a 14g you should be ok, just be careful with it.

I have had no trouble with my mag float on my 5.5G nano. In my experience, the only time I have scratched glass was when I would clean down by the sand bed, stirred it up a bit and sand pebbles got stuck in between the brush and the glass. This has happened on my 55 but never on my nano. I think its because the magnets in the larger floats are very strong, making it easy for sand in there to scratch the glass. But the small ones have comparitively weak magnets in it, so if sand gets in there, it will most likely fall out or at least not be pushed against the glass so hard. This is the way I see it in my experiences anyway. Take it with a grain of salt. Ultimately, when you use a mag float, just pay attention to what is going on. If you hear a high pitched screeching noise, dont keep moving around, take it out and inspect it for sand pebbles.
