Natural Reef Photoperiod vs. Reef Tanks

Or we could just pay attention to our corals and tailor the light to their needs.

+1

Reefs and aquariums are totally different in many ways. In aquariums we shoot for ideal, the reef is exposed to 365 "average days" some good some bad.

I follow what works well for me.

Even though they are in the shallow area, they don't get full lighting all day.
The sun at its midday peak is much more intense than three hours before or after....

you did read where i said i run Led's and T-5's.. for several hours before my Halides come on and off. Right?

And as for Corals not receiving high amounts of light in the mornings and afternoons, That may be true with some corals, especially corals in deeper waters..

What about corals in extremely shallow water? some SPS are exposed to air and full blown sunlight during every low tide.

As seen here. These corals are definitely not struggling to adjusting to the plethora of light they're receiving, i would assume, throughout the entire day.

ok.. so with light intensity aside... obviously the quality and strength of light is going to be different on the natural reef, thats not the point of this thread.

Duration of photo period, corals in nature are still exposed to some sort of light, intense or not, for around 14 hours. So what sort of positive or negative effects does a shorter photo period have on SPS. That is the question.

Better growth/color with a full 14 hours of some amount of light or does a shorter period produce the same amount of growth and color.

"This proved that at higher light intensities, light and photosynthesis were not the limiting factors for coral growth, as coral growth was not proportional to photosynthesis." (from the earlier quoted article)

While this is geared at intensity, it is also relevant to the duration question.
In my opinion, it may not be as clear cut as; longer photoperiods and thus more photosynthesis leading to increased growth rates. There are many other factors at play.

A: 14hr low light = OK or brown color

B: 10-12hr low light + 6hr intense light = good color

C: full 14 hours of some amount of light = I am not sure. :)

B is the BEST choice!

B is the BEST choice!

What is this based on?

I've always ran a 12-13 hour photo period and I feel I've had pretty successful results with my sps as far as growth and color.

With that being said. I do typically run LEDs for half an hour.. Then.. T-5s and the metal halides run anywhere from 6-8 hours. So it's not a strong amount of light for the whole period but it is definitely light in the tank.
