Navarchus Size?

I've been around the hobby for sometime. I have seen a lot of the wholesale side along with the retail. I have seen some amazing things, including a freshly shipped dead maroon clown that was easily 7 inches and Achilles tangs that were atleast 11 inches. However, I have never seen a Pomacanthus navarchus over six inches.

The max size on this fish is listed at 10 inches but does this fish really get this big? I have kept these fish on several occasions and they tend to be extremely slow growers. I would love to hear some feedback from others who have kept this fish or seen truly large specimens.

Here's a great photo just to spur interest.

I have a good friend with a specimen that's 8 inches. She got him at about 6" 3 years ago from a LFS, where he was donated from another tank. I wish I had a picture of him to share, but yes, they do get that big and are a magnificent fish. I have a small one right now at about 3", grown out from a .75" full juvenile. So far he's grown quickly, but I expect it to slow down once he gets to 4 or 5 inches.

NYA had one for sale the other day that was listed as 10"-11". They said it was the biggest they'd ever seen.

How reef safe are they, in your experience?

I bought mine as a juvi.. he was about 1" when i bought him.. Now after 2,5 years he is about 5" and does not bother any corals. He is in my mixed reef and is a model citizen for sure. I guess once they reach the 5" mark they grow really slowly.

He loves nori and eats like a pig.

buying a specimen that is 8-10 inches is one thing...
but ime/imo, a baby navarchus will rarely grow that large in a tank- unless it is massive...
the babies I have raised and seen raised, all seem to top out around 6-7 with some getting to 7-8 inches...
I have a baby now and just love these fish...
one of my fav fish and I think probably the most often overlooked angel there is...
imo they are the prettiest of all the "blue and white" baby angels....the electric blue stripes are just awesome...
good luck....

The one in the video is a monster!

yeah, that individual is off the charts...but Michael gets killer stuff at nya...I like how you can see the gentleness of the fish in the video...they are really mellow, for the most part...lol, mine is currently getting over hating me but I have mentioned that previously...

I agree with huma, they are really mellow.. And like you said the electric blue stripes are just awesome! Especially in bluelight its stunning. My navarchus is such a great fish and does never harm any coral or other fishes. One of my favs!

That's a great looking fish and tank? Do you keep clams with yours? If so have you had any problems?

Thank you. Yes, I had clams in my tank and he did not touch them. A friend of mine has several clams about 40-50cm in his tank and thats no problem with his navarchus. But you'll never know thats the problem..
