Neat growth GIF, alternating photos 11 days apart.

Talk about a good growth, look that birdnest

Thank you! That birdsnest is going crazy, I'm going to have colonies of them before my acros incrust lol. The difference in growth rate is remarkable to me, especially since the acros have more flow and light.

This is really cool. I started researching it a little. How difficult is it to learn and code? I know some basic stuff but never did anything like this. I am Fairly tech savvy and catch on quick. Seems like a great learning tool as well. What are your thoughts on someone getting one with little experience?

Sure - this is simply a raspberry pi with a raspberry pi cam attached to it. I think these links are allowed:

Raspberry Pi (better than mine, quad core)

This is great for a computer hobbyist because it runs a special distro of Linux, but there are apps you can even run on an old cell phone that would do the same thing for people looking at a more plug and play solution.

I actually put together a little tutorial on this, it's a little ruff but it will get you started! The way I did this does not require any coding, it's just simple operating system commands.

Here is the camera I have that captured this, it takes photos every 15 min during the light period. The eventual goal is a timelapse, something like 30 seconds of film = 6 months of growth.

The Camera was about $28, it's 5 megapixel, and the Raspberry Pi was about $35. It runs linux and there are lots of instructables out there about how to configure it to take the pictures. I mounted it to a car cell phone holder and stuck it to the tank:

Dude, awesome! Ive been tinkering with arduinos for a while and recently the pi but have been having trouble coming up with an aquarium related project. This fits the bill perfectly, thanks!

Awesome!!! Glad to see a couple more people jumping on board!!! You have to come back here and post what you come up with! I'm still trying to figure out a better tank mount than I have now.

Another growth shot treat I'm putting together is also on my site. I'm updating shots of the tank, and corals every month or so to show how they are growing out. I only have a few up right now, but it's still cool to check out.

Be sure to check back, I plan to update with shots this month after this weekend.

Great shots. What kind of lighting do you have on your tank? I got my raspberry pi this weekend. I played around a little bit with it. Got it set up and the camera on. I haven't set the white balance or size yet. Hoping to have some time this week to mess around with it a little more. Very cool little toy. I could see myself getting a few more of these for different applications. Glad I saw your post on this.

I use one for a OpenELEC Media Center running Kodi, it is AMAZING and I just love it. I had the older version using RaspBMC and it was fantastic too. You should look up some tutorial on how to set this up and see if it's something that would be valuable to you too.

Thank you! I have 4x55W Tek T5 setup, with ~40W DIY Led right in the middle, I still think my light level is a little low and would like to add about 20 more W behind the last T5 bulb. The problem I'm having with the LED's is how spotty they are, if I add some behind the T5 tubes as well it will even things out a bit for the corals up top.
