need advice

I'm sure you already know this but make sure you put a powerhead in your 50gal tote. Gotta keep that water moving, don't want to starve the fish of oxygen. I think just recently someone didn't do this and lost there fish.

+1 yup. the lack of circulation will kill them. and check temp as well. do you need any help? I can come over tomorrow.

Ok well im tossing the sump its allready disconnected and im using a 30 gallon tote for sump . i got rid of that sump the day after this all happened . So in he tote i just have the drains going into filter sock then i have my g4x then return thats it.

Here is my plain tommorow. I have my fish all in a 55 gallon tote with basically no filtration so im going to empty my tank completly toss all sand and water take all rock and put in tote with new water and test everyday for a while see what happens . But in mean time with all new sand and water im going to have to add my fish back in there . Really no other option i have big fish and a 55 with no filtration with all new water isn'tgoing to work for long atleast with the 210 i have lots of filtration.

Now heres where i need help what type of vinagar do i clean it with? Allso after i clean it do i just pump water out fill up with regular water and pump out again ? How do i know if all vinagar is out and will it hurt anything if there was some left behind?

As for rokplease give me suggestions? I put 3 big peices in tot with fish now and it hasn't spike anything so do you think rock might be ok to put in or should i bake it or what? The rock is really my main concern cause everything else i dont have much choicebut there is allot of options on rock.

Opps 1 last thing my clown trigger and desjardinii are still in there and look fine so. i allso have a pair of blood shrimp and pair of cleaners and 3 peps they all look fine wh is that?

tossing sump is good idea. I understand you need to get the fish back into the tank, but if you are adding all new water? I'm still rather new at all this, but I think your tank will go through an inevitable cycle and the fish may suffer. Maybe someone can take the fish in for you until this is complete?????

You want WHITE DISTILLED VINEGAR. just keep rinsing until you can't smell it anymore. If some is left behind, it will not hurt anything especially in a large tank.

If the water in the tote is stable and the fish seem okay, chances are good that the rock is okay. Because rock is porous, some things can get trapped inside...

This is a tough situation for sure, and I don't envy what you are going through.
These are only my humble observations...hopefully a veteran reefer will step in to confirm.

Good luck Mike.

Kat i may take you up on that offer seeing that this is going to suck.lol

Btw anyone selling sump or return pump?

yup. it's gonna suck. and yes, I would be more than happy to help you in whatever way I can. Anytime before 1 or after 4 would work. PM me.

Well the fish are in all new water now . A cycle will not be nearly as bad as what they where in. when i qt i have allways used all new water and i have never lost a fish from that.

hey Mike just a FYI Put your local your avatar..people that know the area you live will be willing to do more hands on help and stuff..

Itried putting it on hopfully it worked im in rochester. So back to this rock sitution shouldi cook it then let it dry out? Or think i could still use it i hope .

Allso does anyone have a canister filter i can buy or rent to run carbon for a while ?

too many variables for me to post an accurate response here.

If you're going to try and maintain an Acropora system I would ditch the sump, otherwise..... for softies and fish.... the sump (and rock) is probably re-usable.

"Cooking" liverock is a process to reduce PO4- not other pollutants.

If you can't find a canister filter you can always run carbon inside a fine mesh filter bag and place it in an area of good flow.

these critters are (basically) tough as nails.

Good candidates for FO's with high nitrates.

Plain white vinegar is fine. It's just a 5% solution of acetic acid distilled water. Just a wipe down and a rinse should do.It's harmless and used for organic carbon dosing in many tanks in small amounts.

Two events probably sunk your tank. The curing process for the silicone in the water gives off acids( grow bacteria, deplete oxygen, mes with ph, ammonia ,etc). The anti mold agent provided toxins. I don't know if the anti mold agents are sticking around on rock, glass etc.Wish I culd be more precise about that.

Be sure to wipe down and rinse the inside of the rubbermaid bin with vinegar too. This should remove any ting sticking to it from the manufacturing process.

The rock may /may not have anti mold agent in/on it. I just don't know. An acid bath with muriatic acid will melt the surface of the rock and everything stuck there will be removed . This also kills everything in /on the rock leaving you with dry rock. It may not be necessary. If I were to try reusing the live rock with livestock I would run granulated activated carbon and some polyfilter and/or cuprisorb for at least few months.

So here is my plan of acting ditch all water and all sand clean everything with vinagar going to be hard to get in over flows but will try. Fill back up with all new water and sand. keep my rock .

Can i bol my sand o somthing or just toss it? Its only 1 year old and was expenisie .

You can give it a bleach bath overnight at 25 to 50% plain Chlorox and water to remove organics.Thorough rinse .Then an acid bath in 50% vinegar and water for a couple of hours or 1 to 10 muriatic acid to remove precipitants. Too long and the sand will melt. Rinse; dry and use. Using it with just a rinse is possible but risky and I wouldn't personally.

Ok well now im confused . Would the silcone affect the ammonia or nitrates? cause i took my water 3 times to local store which they tested and it was around 100 ppm and the ammonia was 1.0 ... i just tested and my ammonia is 1.0 but nitrates which i tested 4 times is 5.0 not 100 i even used 2 different test. . This sucks any thoughts before i do this?
