Need help! Thumb is numb 2 days think I was stung?

Hi Shawna, I hope all is well but if not ive got a couple questions for ya. Is your entire thumb numb or most parts Ie. sides of the thumb and the tip and under the nail? Any pain in the rest of your hand. Any pain when grasping such as a steering wheel, pen or knob? If any of these are symptoms I would say it is either a bruised or damaged nerve or nerve ending usually near the base of your thumb near the wrist. Unfortunately nerve tissue is the slowest healing tissue in your body. If this is the case it could take some time for the feeling to return. Your neurologist will probably tell you this but I would get a jump on it now. Make sure your getting a proper portion of B12 even if you have to supplement your diet or take a B12/B6 pill. If you can get just B12 that would be best. Its hard to over do it on B12 but easy to over do B6. B12 is an essential vitamin in the repair and maintenance of your bodies electrical impulses ( nerves ) Also start taking daily, a mild anti inflammatory such as Ibuprofen or Advil. Since you cant feel the thumb hard to tell if it is being overworked. The Advil will keep any swelling down allowing the correct flow of fluids to where the healing needs it most. This will most likely be the Physicians advise as an injury like that can only be healed by the body with time. If its some other ailment than there would be no harm done by this type of treatment. as long as you dont chase the B12 and Advil with vodka youll be OK :)

you are welcome, shawna...lots of people caring about each other here...and everyone should have a "jason". because sometimes we don't get that "loud and clear" from people...i for one know i need it sometimes!

Hang in there sweetie...

Hi all.. been awhile... surprised to see this thread. At first it reminded me of the " Numb Thumb Club" which was a reward club for activision games on the old atari 2600 in the 80's where you would get badges in the mail from having mailed pictures of your high score to activision. So much for the obscure reference... This doesn't sound like a rewarding experience at all though. I hope your thumb comes around soon.

About the loud and clear, it seems to me that the guy was just trying to use "tough love" to get you to do the right thing... call it a kick in the butt or a woof woof - bark worse than bite. He had your well being at heart and wanted to motivate you.

... John OL a.k.a. elvn

Hi John,
Glad you are back! Thanks and yes you are right "Tough love" :frog: Guess I need thicker skin as "tmz" Tom would say :)
Your tank is coming along great btw :)

This morning I woke up and I can feel it a bit more "so it is improving" just not fast enough for me lol.
Thanks so much though :)

Sorry. :worried:

Next time I'll try to go a little easier on you. But, I wanted to make sure the message was LOUD and CLEAR (mission accomplished). Regardless, in the end you did the right thing IMHO.[/QUOTE

Again^^^^^ don't know why I'm taking offense to your posts maybe your wording  or maybe I'm having an off day but for sake of argument (thank you
for replying and for helping out) (really). Think I just need to get offline for a while and get some sleep it's been a long day.
Take care.

Jason disregard my above reply!:sad1: And I'm sorry "This time"! Thanks for caring enough to comment! :)
Take care.

Not to be an alarmist, but IMHO any time anyone has any sort of reaction from their tank, or gets a wound in their tank, or has an open wound exposed to tank water, they should get medical attention immediately. Just do a google search for Mycobacterium marinum if you need convincing!

I agree with protecting yourself while maintaining an aquarium but there are only about 150 cases of that a year throughout the world. Most of the time people get it, it can go away on its own. The people most at risk are the people that have some immune issues. I did a cool project for college in my biology class on it. It's something scary for sure. Obviously if anything is abnormal around cuts, scrapes, and burns you should get them checked out.

How is the the thumb? :) Hope its coming around.

I sold an electric green haddoni carpet anemone years ago that was outgrowing the tank I had at the time. Sold to a urs member actually. I had both hands palms up cradling the slimy smooth underside of the anemone after I finally got the foot off the bottom glass. When I lowered it into a bucket, it unfortunately flipped a big "lobe" of itself over onto my left hand and stung the hell out of it. I got all the bead like tentacles off my skin and rinsed it etc, but my hand had tiny blisters and stung like a sunburn/burn. It also made my hand shake slightly. I had a prev engagement that night with gf at the time to another couple's house and still went. I could drive and everything it was just uncomfortable and stinging. I drank some beer at the friend's house and that seemed to help lol. It took a few days for all the stinging to go away.
