Need help trouble shooting...

No other water treatments. The water softener uses salt. No chlorinator.

I have read a little about possible small amounts of copper leaching from

No offense to cf, phosphate test is probably poo. Maybe check mag. Double check salinity with calibration fluid. Water quality is about the only thing you can control. Tom does a hell of a job at trs with tap. He also performs big donkey water changes.. water quality issue is my best guess.

Specific gravity

Maybe I missed it, but what's your specific gravity?

Also, what type of salt are you using?

Water change size?

Water change size?

Ok, thanks for the input so far. I would say that this is a 50g-55g system. How big would you go on a water change?

I'm not super experienced, but I'd do 10% to 25% water changes -- minimum -- every week.

I've got a 20 gallon. After you take out rock, sand, etc, I'm guessing I've got about 17 or less gallons of water. I do 5 gallon water changes every week. What's that, about 30% or so?

My zoas grow like a weed.

...just my two cents.

Hope it helps.

I have the RODI set up. Tomorrow I plan on setting up a large brute to store the rodi water. Once this is all running I plan on making a fresh batch of saltwater and doing a large, 15-20 gallon water change. Again, I will keep everyone posted.

Hey guys, just a thought, I have not tested or checked magnesium levels (no test kit). Wouldn't low mag limit my corals growth? My tank consumes almost no alk or calcium during the week.

Thoughts appreciated.

you're doing regular water changes with one of the popular "reef salt mixes" chances are that you're Mg levels are fine....

but you won't really know until you use a Mg test :)

I know what you mean. I always thought I was fine for that same reason. But nothing is growing and I can't figure out why.

Buy a test kit?

Yep, still nothing. Leather looks like crap now, never fully opens up. Blasto, duncan and the leather never seem to open up fully. Salinity crept up (1.028) as my refracto wasn't calibrated. I have this fixed and am running at 1.024 right now as per suggested by Tom. That was almost 2 weeks ago and still no change. In addition to fixing the salinity issue, Tom also suggested I only run 2 of my 4 bulbs to let corals recover. Again, I have seen no improvement in anything :sad2: Running out of ideas...:uhoh3:

Red stuff is red lava rock. it was removed over a month ago. It had been used for years in my fish only tank, I know it could have been an issue so I removed it. I also began running Cuprisorb when it was pulled just incase it leached anything. No change for the better or worse since removing that rock and running cuprisorb.

I should also add that the last two weeks my water changes have been 20g, which is pretty large on my 50g system.

Probably at this point, you are doing the right things, and it's just going to take time. After a large water change, do you notice anything look a little more expanded - like the next day?

I would maybe take the refugium off-line - I don't think it's really doing anything for you, and I don't like the look of that brown algae.

In person the algae is green. The cheato grows. I notice no difference in anything after a water change. I am really getting frustrated, I have been in the hobby for a pretty long time. This tank is really throwing me for a loop.

I'm not sure what's going on. Like they say: good things happen slowly, and bad things happen quickly. Whatever screwed up your water (if that's what it is) could be slow to leach back out of the rock and be removed through water changes.

Or the leather is ****ed off.
