Saw this critter crawling around on rock this evening, not sure what it is. Any ideas? Has what kind of resembles a banded trochus shell, but the shell looks soft and much to small for a shell...Just want to make sure its safe.

bump...here is pic...

difficult from the pic, its a little small. But I would do a search on Stomatella snails. Looks like one.. If so, they are good guys and will reproduce readily in your tank..

could even be a limpet: still having trouble making it out. Nothing about it looks imminently threatening, at least.

looks to me like a TOLKEIN COWRIE.
it has a shiny shell to it & it also has a protective skin that looks hairy so it blends in when it goes to sleep, only reasond i know is cuz i bought 3 of these 2 years ago as part of my clean up crew.

Thanks for the input...Would one of these just evolve? I never purchased on and live rock is alomst a year old. Yet, I have only seen this little guy within the past two weeks.

I think we have a winner!!! Nagel, I think you are right. After googling, definitely looks like a Stomatella snail. Thanks everyone for the help...

Its not evolution  You nailed the answer yourself though.

"Also, it is completely nocturnal (ran from a flash light). And is a pretty quick moving bugger..."

Thats why you probably didn't notice it. Mine run for cover when the lights come on. If I look at the glass late at night, there are dozens on it, if not hundreds. As soon as the light comes on, its the mad dash for cover.

They can hitchhike on anything, live rock, corals, etc.. It may have hitched in on a recent coral purchase.
