Need help with Zoas/Palys

Ah Morgan, yes they have some nice Z's and P's collections.

But if you Google for zoanthids, locations , collection area and such you will see the diversity of geographic locations, depths and water quality they are in. Which IMHO, one placement of a specific Zoanthid may not work the best for another.

It am having a horrible experience with my native fla ZOA based tank. About 70% of my ZOA's are shrinking and melting away, while other colonies are florishing. Its very depressing to me to have ANYTHING in my tank die. I cannot find a reason for what is going on. http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2413122. That was a couple of months ago

I bet it is lighting. I have seen this happen once I changed to LED lighting and the source of the frags I bought did not use LED. I believe the Zoas are trying to shield themselves. They start by curling the skirts up then don't ever feel comfortable spreading back out. I would try moving them to a lower lit spot. Zoas are my favorite corals and honestly I think they may be some of the hardest.

So far it appears that some are starting to get better after the chemiclean treatment under the frag tank's T5 lighting. Others look the same.

Still to early to say for sure. And I'm not inclined to do another chemiclean treatment. I'm going to give them awhile longer to see if they'll heal and expand on their own.

things are going better for me now. I think because of these factors:

- mag kept up at 1250
- UV filter (this the least helpful i suspect)
- making sure my GFO was working (it was clogged before)
- better skimmer (i upgraded to an aquamaxx, lots of skimmate, nasty smell)
- brushing algae off/around zoa and letting extra flow take care of it

Zoas stopped dying/melting, and some are finally multiplying quickly now (1-3+ polyps in 1-2 months). My coralline is blowing up too.

I got a aquamaxx HOB cone S, haven't hooked it up yet.

Mag I've recently started to see affect my Z's if too, I say since early this year I've been dosing Mag.

i don't know how well the HOB is, I hope it proves worthy.

when you mean affecting your Zs, do you mean for the better? what is it now and what was it before? curious

If when my Z's and P's look like SHIIEET, but when I check pH, Alk, Salinity and Temp are all good, i found that when I check mag its low. I dose and with in a couple days zoas are back from biiitchmode. Maybe just a coincidence but its worked so far.
