I'm slowly building a mixed reef system, corals to come soon. I'm looking for a good sand sifter to keep the sand surface stirred. I currently have 2 jawfish but they only keep a small area of my 245 DT mixed. Besides that I have a std CUC but they can not keep up with the brown lgea that grows on the surface of the sand - only a small amount but still a weekly attack point during WC. Any advise would be very helpful.

My dragon goby cruises around the whole 55g of my tank, he always seems to have a mouthful!

I really like sleeper gobies for this task. I had a gold headed sleeper goby who kept my sand nice and white for me. He had great personality too. The only downside is any corals you may have on your sand bed are going to need to be cleared of sand from time to time because of them. A turkey baster will come in very handy if you keep a sleeper goby.

As for longevity, my gold head was in a 30 gallon reef for all 3 years it was up. He went to a new home once that tank went down. So that's really as far as I can comment on that.

I put sand into my QT tank a few months ago durng QT of my jawfish. I know most people recommend bare bottom but had no choice with the jawfish to give them a more normal environment during the QT period. Haven't needed to treat anyone yet so I have just left it in there. If I do run into a problem where I need to medicate I do plan on pulling it out along with the few LR I've got in there. I did not feel comfortable not having some lr in the QT. Of course it is forever locked into the QT only but a few pounds of lr is no big deal in the big picture imo.
