Hey everyone....I have finally convinced my wife to upgrade my 55 gallon tank. I was wondering if I should go to a 90 or 120 RR tank. My current 55 does not have a sump or anything so any change will be a plus. Just trying to see what everyone thinks and their experiences.
Thanks!

I'd go 120 if I was choosing between the two. The extra width will be very nice to work with.

Depends on the dimensions you want to work with. Can get both 4 ft or the 120 in 6 ft. Do you want it longer or wider?

I am thinking a 4ft tank. Where it will go in the house would house a 6 ft but it would feel cramped.

Consider putting a 75 in the mix - same footprint as the 90, just a touch shorter in height.

here is a size guide: http://alysta.com/books/fishtank.htm

If you can do the 120 the depth is FANTASTIC - just watch the weight - the 120 comes in at 350lbs more than the 90 and 550lbs more than the 75.

enjoy!

If I was given the choice, 120 all day long. I love the depth and look of them. Hands down the second best 4' tank (right after the Marineland DD 200 gallon).

55 is a poor choice for a reef aquarium (way too narrow)

4ft. 75 is best choice for beginner IMO

4ft. 120 and 6ft. 180 are the best two choices for a home reef aquarium in most cases

OK. It looks like it is a landslide. I will upgrade to a 120. Exciting times up ahead! Now I have to start making my list of things I will need

#1 on the list......cash!

Seriously though, great call on the upgrade. You wount regret going to the 120. Nice depth both top to bottom and front to back. Easy to work on without a snorkle or shirt removal. Room underneath for a. Sump unless you go basement sump.

No worries. I'm doing an in stand sump this go round. Aside from squatting down, its not an issue. Having everything in one room suits my lifestyle at the moment and is really quite easy. I do my tests while I'm watching the kids, TV, doing some cooking, cleaning etc.

At our last house I'd disappear into the basement for an hour or more. That simply wont fly these days. The biggest challenge for you will be designing the sump based on what equipment you plan to employ. Keep your eyes peeled for people selling off live rock or other equipment. You'd be surprised how much you can save on an upgrade if you take your time and go used on some stuff.

Good point. Seems like everyone is selling stuff nowadays so maybe there are good deals to be had
