Need some help.

For the last couple days I naticed my peacock not really coming out of his burrow. And tonight he didn't come out at all when I fed the fish. Before he always came out and snacked on some mysis shrimp. He hasn't closed up either entrance to his burrow. So I am not sure if he is about to molt. He does have plenty of rubble to close it up if he wanted to. Also I noticed within the last couple weeks he has been taking out some of my turbo snails. I keep him on a regular feeding of every three days. And rotate his food as well. Could he have had to many turbos to eat and now just being lazy or is there something else going on? Any help on this would be great.

My peacock did something similar when she molted. Even though she had plenty of rubble also, she ended up stealing a small ball of macroalgae that was in the tank to close up her burrow. She took about 2 1/2 weeks for the entire process, and wouldn't take live food for about a week prior to her molt.

He has three entrances to his burrow. he closed up the middle a while back. As of right now the other two are open. So is possible he just became lazy from eating to many snails or could he be getting ready to molt even though his burrow id no closed up?

Peacocks can be strange wth molting. Most gonodactylids will close up to molt, but sometimes peacocks won't and will be out and about the next day, or maybe not. Some will even molt out in the middle of the tank. They can be strange creatures.

Well how will I be able to tell if he is actually molting? I came home tonight and he poked his head out for a minute and retreated back to his burrow. If he is not about to molt then what could be going on. Granted he didn't come out much with the daylights on, but he would come out a lot when it is just the atinics on. So am I just being paranoid or is there something major going on?

sounds like he might be getting ready to molt. my peacock is and he's acting a lot stranger so don't worry, he doesn't come out as much either. when was the last time yours molted and how big is he?

I have had him now for two months and he hasn't molted since I have gotten him. He is currently around 4" long. So I hope this is what he is about to do.

Well he came out tonight and took a peice of krill. I am not sure if he ate it though. His color looked a little off, he seemed a little more brown in color. I don't know if he molted or is getting close too. Do peacocks shell color change before they molt? And when do they stop eating when they are going to molt?

they look more mottled and drab and they stop eating when molt comes.

IMO he is about to molt. I don t have a ton of experiancer with mantis, and they are slightly different then the crayfish lobster shrimp I have raised.

In my experiance the look like crap and act wierd for a few days, they stop eating, then the lock themselves up and dont come out for about 48hrs. then the old shell gets ejected from the den (some eat it). then its about 72hrs more while the new shell hardens and they come out.

Good luck

Well he molted!!!

Well he molted!!!

He must have molted a short while ago (say within the last week or so) without me even noticing. I found pieces of his old shell in front of his burrow. I don't know if his new shell is completely hardened up yet. He did snap at the feeding stick Friday night when I feed him. So this is great news that he made it thru his first molt with me. For what I can tell also his slight shell disease is completely gone too. Now I am just waiting for my little wennerae to get thru his first molt with me.

So here are couple new questions for everyone. Do peacocks color change after they molt? Granted he really hasn't come out completely yet to see him in his new shell. How long do peacocks does it take for peacocks to molt?

As for my little wennerea: He moved to a larger home and closed up his tunnel and hasn't come out now for a few days. I believe he his molting now as we speak. So how long does it take for this little guy to molt also?

Thank you for everyones help on this matter up to this point and thank you for any help the new questions.

Man what happened to everyone in this forum? It seems like everyone has just goy up and left. I just hope I can get some answers soon, like a few others in this forum. I can't really help on certain subjects, since I am still new to this.
