Need sponge advise

I have this bright red encrusting type sponge. Can it be fragged? How would I go about attatching it to substrate?

I've fragged lots of corals, but never a sponge. Any advice would be appreciated.

Anymore info on how large the sponge is stickout?

can you remove the rock?

do you want to leave some behind?

is it like a really soft sponge and kind of slimey or firm?

sometimes just slicing a piece with a razor will do

It will attach to substrate just like coral leave it in a low flow area maybe in a dish

but you can also squeeze it into a hole/crevice too and it will eventualy attach

Maybe this pic will help.

Yes I can remove the rock. Not sure if it's soft, slimey or firm, wasn't sure if I should touch it. This is my first intentional sponge, I don't know much about them. Won it in a club raffle last night. I may try to just trim a piece of it and wedge it in a rock crevice as stated.

that will be your best option because it looks firm to just slice it with a razor/scalpel under water then place it in a tight fitting rock crevice

or

put a rock on each side of the sponge portion firmly pushed against it until it attached naturaly then slice the sponge leaving a portion on each rock on the sides

Nice sponge

Thanks for the help. I'll give that a try. I will become sponge savy one of these days.

I would tear it rather than slice it. Sponges often contain defensive chemicals which can be quite toxic to other organisms. If you slice it then every cell that's cut will release the chemicals. When you tear it (gently & slowly) it may split along internal channels so there's less damage & less chemicals. Also, do the job in a separate container so whatever is released doesn't reach your other critters. Change the water once or a couple of times. When there's no visible leaching of color or fluid from the sponge it can go back into the main tank.
