Need Suggestions On Moving!

So, after a long period of looking for a place, shopping rates, negotiations, looks like we'll finally close escrow by friday and me and my better half be a new home owners for the first time! WOO HOOOO!!! sorry, just really excited!!

Now for the question.....how can i move my current tank without hurting anything?? its only my nano but i never had to move a tank in my life so i have no clue. ill pack up my livestock in individual bags and keep the water and rocks in a container but for the sand..... i know ill be disturbing it big time so should i just dump it and add new sand?

If it was me, I would dump the sand and put in new sand. There is so much crap in our sand. When disturbed, all the crap is released.

You can get a bag of your old sand and transfer it to new sand. This will seed the new stuff. Plus I don't know how much crud and extra nutrients you will stirr up with all the old sand

I 'd dump the sand (keep a cup or two). Also, I would setup temporary tank in the new place before moving the critters.

Also, IME, I would keep the least on your current digs a month after you close. This will allow you to do any cleaning, fixing, moderate improvements (painting, concrete sealing, etc), and most important, preparing the temp. tank in the new house.

Congrats on the new house.

ok, so ill keep a cup or two to seed my new sand and just dump the rest. thanks guys! sid, what do you mean by keeping the least on my current digs? Thank you btw!

I think he means giving yourself some living time in your current place while your fixing up your home... Thats what we did when we bought our home, we stayed 4-6 weeks extra in our apt. while we spent time cleaning, painting , new wood floors etc.. on our new home..

doing so keeps the new home unfurnished allowing you to work on it easily without stuff in there.

Can you just take out some water and bring the whole thing over to the new house? Couple guys shouldn't have any problem carrying a nano tank :D ..

It would be worth it to move-in (with all your stuff) to your new house after you have prepared it. Things like cleaning, painting, sealing, caulking, etc. Doing all these things in an empty house is easier than having stuff around.

I would also prepare the area where you're going to put that new stand. Add or upgrade electrical outlets, make sure its level and has proper support, etc.

I'm advising to stay at your old place, while you prepare the new house.

thanks for clarifying del, we did plan on doing that but no major repairs really need to be done, everything has already been upgraded, just needs new toilet, some re-caulking in the bathroom and trimming. other than that were set!besides tearing down the living room wall to make a inwall tank....hmmmmmm.

Easier to move than your nano as well.

If all you have is a 5.5g tank, I'd bet that you could drain the tank down to one inch of water above the sand, and move the nano intact with the sand on the bottom. Rocks and such would travel in a sealed igloo or similar.

If you are careful, and can move the nano (support the bottom) without disturbing the sand too much, you should be fine. Although little disturbances get amplified in a small tank.

Your silly sea creatures and rocks can probably live in a 10g igloo for quite some time (days to weeks) with proper flow, while you set your tank back up.

BTW, how far are you moving, and will you have stairs to deal with?

from east side to south, talking maybe 15 min drive. and yes, there is stairs to deal with! i thought about draining it really low but i figured disturbance is a disturbance and all that nasty stuff will get kicked up.

i recently had a bad outbreak of red algae, so i figured this maybe a good time to rinse off my rocks and change out the sand.

First of...Congrats Mel on your new place!!! I'm in for some manupua or siopao... ;)lmk if you need some help moving bro, were here ready to help. Lock and load...Hooraahhh!
