I'm looking for anyone that has pics of the underside of a H. Cripsa and H. Malu. When my tank is ready I'm buying a "Sebae" nem from a local but I'm not sure that is what it is.It is green with purple tips and is very sticky from what he says.It also has alot of little bumps on the underside and has short tentacles.Hope this helps in anyway.
Thanks,Daniel

H. Crispa has a solid white, crinkled surface. Think cowhide or elephant skin, but white like an albino. H. Malu has smooth and usually white with dark gray or brown visible through it. On H. Malu's underside, the most obvious feature will be rows of bumps called veruccae. I would post pics but I'm not at the PC right now upload them.

Its next to impossible to get a photo of the underside of mine, he's anchored in pretty good.

Good descriptions except that H. crispa has rows of veruccae under the oral disk as well.

IME, most of the anemones imported as H. malu are actually H. crispa that are just in less than great shape.
Tentacle length in captive specimens is often more an indicator or environment than a species indicator.
Malu "usually" have concentric rings around their tentacles like this specimen.

H. crispa tends to be more robust. Here is a pic of a purple one with the veruccae showing under the disk.

Here is a pic of a H. crispa showing a green tint to its oral disk. This crispa also had yellow/green tentacle tips instead of the normal purple tips.

Thank you very much Phil for posting these pics. The second one looks exactly like the "sebae" I'll be buying but mine will be green with purple tips.
Thanks again everyone.

Phender,

Do you have a good pic of a H. Malu underside? I can't seem to find one that doesn't look like your H. Crispa pic. And the pic I have of H. Crispa's underside is much thicker and wrinkled than what you posted. Any idea what causes the difference?

I have never kept H. malu. The pic I posted was pulled of the internet.

The column of the purple sebae is white and somewhat leathery in appearance it is just a little thinner out near the edge.
FWIW, I have found that H. crispa that were buried in the sand when purchased tended to have more delicate columns. When those same anemones started to live in the rocks, their columns became more leathery.

I would research further. I don't know if Ive ever seen a green sebae. Make sure it's not just dyed. It would be pretty upsetting if it changed to brown on you while in your tank, or died due to the dye.

Strategic resposition of the power head only revealed this

That is exactly what the one I'm buying looks like.Same color-looks green to me.Same bumps. Now how much flow is considered moderate. Also can i put it on just live rock since it is already just attached to a piece of live rock from what I can tell.
Thanks Bradam for the pics.

When I first brought mine home he was white as can be with purple tips so I hadn't a clue what color it would turn. I had read they live in the sand so I put it in the sand at the edge of the rockpile but it climbed up on a rock pretty quick. Later I kind of buried the rock with it's foot on it and then it just climbed up on the rock its on now so I left it there. Hasn't moved in over a year. Initially it got the brown color first, then eventually the green appeared much later. The photo seems to make it look alot greener then it really is but I've yet to figure out how to take good photos of the tank stuff yet.

I just picked up a divers den purple sebea anemone listed as heteractis malu. I got it and it looks like a purple crispa with a orange base but its got white parts to it. Wierd ill take some pics but right now its foot is in the sand and it looks like a purple sebea
