Nemo Babies - Kat's 90g

aquaph8, feeding the parents is key. They need lots of high quality food. I prefer human grade seafood to make up a bulk (80%) of their diet. Without high quality foods, the fish won't lay eggs, the eggs will be eaten, or the fry won't be strong at hatching.

Thanks for the tip. I've wanted try making my own food for awhile anyways. I guess this will give me a reason to. They seem to be showing signs of wanting to breed but it never happens, I will give it a shot.

It may be for the better. This will give you a chance to get your rotifers and phyto going strong. Also, it will give you a chance to get a rotifer sieve.

i agree. just said that today...and i've been down in the basement this morning getting things organized better and doing some charting cheat sheet sorta stuff. I may need to go over this whole thing with you again....;)

still no eggs...but they are puffing at the rock again. I've got the basement set up going well now with a rotifer tank, 3 2l containers of phyto and the fry tank. ordered a rotifer sieve online. Will keep you updated.

Awesome So question guys? What food without making is a great food? And also I'm still confused with the phyto? Great thread following Will probably print out!

Just2Many,
There are many high quality foods that you can buy. Making them is cheaper though. I usually make enough food in about 2 hours to last me a year. Rod's food and Otohime (hard to find) are two really good foods. I've had success with formula 1 & 2 pellets as well. This was a staple of my clowns diet for a while. There are lots of high quality frozen foods as well. Just watch the nitrates and phosphates with store-bought (especially frozen) food.

What are you confused about with they phyto?

Good luck with these Kat. Mine should hatch Sunday night I think. Looks like I've gotta get another tank going on my rack. :D

my clowns eat Rod's food and New Life Spectrum Pellets. They absolutely love the pellets. As a note, my mandarin likes them too...so that says alot.

So, Nirvana Fan...when these guys get the silvery eyes again...what exactly do I add to my fry tank? A combo of the phyto and rotifers?

This time, I will wait until babies hatch and then immediately remove the nem...as I found NO TRACE of bodies with the last batch.

Since the last batch, i found a coffee sieve at Walmart with the micron mesh screen and now have 3 bottles of phyto and an up and running rotifer tank.

My neighbors are curious. ;)

When they hatch, you should pull the rock out that they hatched on. It won't help, and will cause problems. Add a bunch of rotifers. Maybe like 4 or 5 gallons to see how dense they are. Then you want to tint the fry water with phytoplankton. Make it a light green tint. Just enough so you can barely see the bottom of the tank.

ok. missed the window this time. and.....i believe i compromised the phytoplankton...because the containers are almost clear. Which means my rotifers are healthy and happy......

NirvanaFan!!! Help!!!!

Oh, and their nem is splitting as i type this. just fed it tonight, has two mouths but still attached at base....

Try pouring the phyto (and rotifers probably) through a 53 micron or smaller screen. A coffee filter would work also. Be VERY careful not to get any non-filtered water into a brand new, never used for rotifers container. Go out and buy a 2 liter bottle of soda and get your kid(s) all sugared up :D

If you use the 53 micron screen, you'll have to filter every day for a couple days. This should get all the rotifers.

Whichever method you use, look at what is caught in the filter. Do you see rotifers or other "bugs"? If not, something else happened. Were you using the micro algae grow? If so, how much per 2 liter? How often did you split/harvest the culture, and how much fertilizer did you add? Explain your exact steps and maybe we can figure out what happened.

If it totally crashes, I can give you some phyto, but it's not going to be ready for a while. Like 5 or 6 days probably.
