NERAC Update

I agree with suzig I look forward to the vendor being there ..i do like speakers also .but honestly I'm a little disappointed that there's hardly any vendors coming I spoke to world wide corals ,Jason fox ,Dan rigley, cherry's and there all not coming they Didn't even know nerac was happening ...kindda lame if you ask me .if there are no vendors no one will attend .
 
Vendors were big for me as well. I have a feeling this is the end for out of state vendors coming to this. They're all realizing its a waste for them. Sad. At least theres still good speakers.
 
While I really, really want vendors like everybody else, I think a little appreciation is called for here. Suzig, referring to Julian Sprung and Charles Delbeek as "consecutive people rambling on about the 3 inches of mud they've studied for the last 2 years" is an insult at best. Reefers across the country would kill for speakers like that. You made some good points.. yes NERAC could be promoted better, but it also has a lot to offer where it stands right now. I'm sure ReefGen will bring a lot of goodies and let's hope some other sweet vendors decide to show, too. Maybe if we all keep up with emails expressing our interest in their attendance they'll change their minds. But until then let's keep positive :)

there isnt enough that changes in a year so if thats the case, the event should be held every other year or 3 to 5 years so there is a good amount to catch up on and speak about. you have to keep ppl interested.

especially with all the information being presented to us on message boards. theres no reason to see someone speak about what they started a thread on last year.

people want corals. they dont want to be put to sleep by 5 consecutive ppl rambling on about the 3 inches of mud they studied for the last 2 years. no offense to the speakers or those who enjoy speakers but lets be honest. i go to the lfs to buy coral, not ask the guy working there a few questions and then bounce empty handed.

Do you realize who the speakers are? They are extremely well respected leaders in the hobby and we are very lucky to have them. How about showing a little thanks to them and the leaders of our club who were able to get them to come to the event instead of insulting them.
 
Right, I'll take a step back from my statements and hope along with you.

John Adams once said "Facts are stubborn things; and whatever may be our wishes, our inclinations, or the dictates of our passion, they cannot alter the state of facts and evidence."

I knew eventually me speaking about something passionately would get me called out by someone. I will not reiterate on what I have already said as it's all above in black and white I meant no disrespect towards anybody. In the end what brings us all together is the coral. that's all this was supposed to be about. You're going to hurt people's feelings trying to get things done

To people on the outside looking in perhaps those speakers are really just talking about mud to them. Not everyone are reef geeks like us but still love coral. The fact remains that in the grand scheme of things nobody knows about NERAC.

The most appropriate way to show them thanks would be to give them an audience to speak too

How about instead of hoping, try doing something to help instead of just criticizing.

Since we are quoting people....Mark Twain once said "Actions speak louder than words but not nearly as often"

I'm sure that the club's board would be interested in hearing any ideas that people have to improve the event.
 
Its a real shame that there we dont have any vendors coming. It was always a great part of NERAC. Are Pets Warehouse and Trop Island coming out as vendors?
 
Any reason why the frag farmers swap is advertised on the LIRA forum but NERAC isn't advertised on the Connecticut forum that I can find?

My "hoping" comment was made sarcastically toward timlikesfish saying he hopes some awesome vendors decide to show up.

I'm bringing the problem to everyone's attention now so next year when everyone's asking why there's no nerac, you'll understand where we went wrong as a group. The first thing I said here was that I don't want to point fingers or put the blame on any one person. This event will fail long term without the presence of vendors. I already talked about doing more to promote nerac at all the lfs. Why you are so interested in speakers when you have no comprehension skills is beyond me
 
I have tried to be quiet, but not speaking my mind was never my strong suit. I have attended every Nerac and always go for the speakers. I could care less if we ever had a vendor at the function. It was never intended to be a Frag Swap. If that's what your looking for, then there are surely enough around. It has always been an opportunity to listen to some great speakers, BS with fellow reefers who you don't see that often and enjoy an incredible day at the aquarium. I have no problem with people wanting vendors I just don't think this was ever the forum for them. We are incredibly lucky as a club to have Joe Y and the Aquarium.
 
Nerac has been advertised in LFS's in the past just not this year for some reason. That certainly didnt help. If theres one next year we gotta stay on top of that.
 
Hey guys, just saw this post and thought I'd chime in...last months meeting was my first LIRA meeting and was happy to join your ranks. I spend a lot of time on MR and I think I've only seen one post about NERAC back in December...that was a long time ago. It also seems to be the same timeframe as the CT swap. I know its not a swap but time is precious so there is some competition...

Anyway the point I wanted to make was theres a lot of bumps about the CT swap and I dont think I saw anything for this. No hype, no excitement, no bumps. Just a simple post like hey sign up for nerac and get $5 off admission...

You don't necessarily need vendors.... I would offer tables for other hobbyists to offer corals.

Also what about social media? Is there anything on Facebook promoting this? Again, I've seen a few pages to Like the flyer for the CT swap. Its pretty easy to share. Also since its at the aquarium, it could be promoted with that in mind as well so ppl who arent necessarily running reef tanks may find some interest. And if its more than they can take, well theres sharks and penguins to go look at.

Anyway, I'd be happy to help share a facebook page a few times and bump some MR posts..I'll go try and find the one MR post now and bump it..

My reading comprehension skills are just fine honey. Talk is cheap. Do something about it if it's that important to you instead of whining about it on a forum.

Have you tried to contact any of the board members with suggestions or questions as to if or why things weren't done the way you suggested? I doubt it.

So, he sees himself as bigger than this event is about the only conclusion I can draw. That's a shame, as Nerac has had several big names over the years.
At least you know who isn't wort trying to get. I think it's even more disturbing that he just ignored you. I would respect him more if he lied and said he had another another event lined up first, and I have no respect for a liar.
