NERAC X - Are you going?

Checking in here.....seems like a very poor showing both here on RC and on our home page (LIRA). I'm wondering why?
If these polls are correct I assume that NERAC will be cancelled for lack of interest. This event has always been very well run, informative, lots of frags and raffle prizes. In years past I remember NERAC being spread out over 2 days.....that was condensed to 1 day. As the number of attendees drop, (interest wanes), so does the number of vendors, (since it no longer is worth their time to show up). Is the poor showing attributed to a lack of interest? Poor advance notice/advertising? The hobby dropping off? I can't figure this out...............

I feel like it's a poor location- it's not more centralized like in NJ. More people would be willing to go there than way out east on LI. I think that's what it is.

I am going, if it's still going on

I think you can't ask for a better location what other swap/ conference is located at one of the best public aquariums.

The conference is once a year (theoretically). It's well worth the drive and as Jay mentioned, it's a great location because the aquarium in right there. Guys who travel can make a trip of it and stay in the hotel for very little money.

What's more alarming is that the membership isn't even supporting the event any longer. Where can you go for $15 these days? Last year when NERAC was cancelled everyone was disappointed, now this year no one is attending. I would imagine if its cancelled again we will probably never see it again. Everyone is waiting for the list of vendors, but with poor early attendance numbers there is little the club board can do to entice vendors.

The board is stumped as well with the low turnout to this and monthly meetings, the email reminders for meetings that go out we're lucky to see 60% even opened. On the flip side the last NERAC had similar responses but we saw our best attendance and that was with snow the night before. Long Island alone has close to 20 places that sell marine animals so doubtful interest in the hobby has dwindled as bad as we think.

Very doubtful we would ever move the event, cost alone for hotel and convention space for the 2 days would put ticket prices well over $50 just to get in the door. Plus why would we want to leave the aquarium, Joe's tank alone is worth the admission and we've had attendees from well outside the NY area come specifically to see Joe's reef. We're very spoiled in access and the time Joe gives us.
