New 9010

Hi, I just set up my 9010 today and after reading the other threads and making some adjustments, I'm still not sure it's working correctly. There is water flowing out of it, but I see only a couple of bubbles at a time (literally 4 or 5 bubbles max) and that's it. Obviously no foam either. Does this just take time to start producing bubbles? This is my first skimmer so I don't know what to expect but I thought it would be bubbling more or foaming.

After reading the other threads, I took the pump out, made sure the nipple was on the end of it, put it back, hooked the air hose on the hook making sure not to pinch it and checked the bottom plate to make sure it was on tight with beveled side in front. The screw is all the way open. Now what?

Thanks!!

It took mine about a week to actually start working with the foam getting up into the neck of the collection cup. If you take the collection cup off and look down inside you should see lots of bubbles coming up. If you still don't have any bubbles down inside the skimmer body, the hose attached to the air screw is probably disconnected.

You can actually slide the top of the skimmer body off just like the bottom. There is a hose there that connects to just below the air screw.

I have also found out the hard way it is possible to put the pump back into the skimmer body incorrectly and still get everything to assemble ok. Make sure the outlet of the pump goes inside the pipe it lines up with inside the skimmer. I fought with my skimmer not working very well for a few weeks and finally figured out I didn't have the outlet of the pump where it belonged.

The nipple may need to be pushed in more or the hose that connects to the top plate under the screw may have come loose so it is taking in water. The top plate clips on with 5 clips, you slide it forward (pull it toward you while facing the side with the Tunze logo. You can check first to see that it is connected by feeling if the hose is loose or not.

I should clarify that even when new, it may not skim but there should still be tons of bubbles.

The air hose was connected right below the screw. But where does the other end of the hose go? It was just hanging loose. There is a connector or nipple that goes on the end of the pump. Does the other end of the hose go in that hole because it doesn't fit properly. It goes about half way and won't go any further so it's loose.

There is a small black piece of plastic with two holes on opposite sides and one hole perpendicular and it fits over the pump/hydrofoamer and then fits onto the connector inside the reactor that holds the pump/hydrofoamer. (Not sure what the correct names are for the parts.) With that piece of plastic connected, the air tube does not fit over the perpendicular hole properly. We took the black plastic piece off and pushed hard until the the tube fit onto the pump nipple. Now there are lots of bubbles. So now my question is - am I supposed to be using that black connector and if so why doesn't it fit the hose?

Also, I know I read previously that the newer model of the 9010 had a distinguishing feature but I can't recall what it was. How can I tell if I got the newer model?

And finally, I bought the foam extractor but left the original collection cup on while trying to get things working. The manual tells how to adjust the screw based on foam build-up in the cup. Do you recommend leaving the cup on until I get it adjusted properly or can I just go ahead and connect the foam extractor?

Thanks everyone for all your help!

I believe you are talking about part 3130.16, the venturi nozzle? It is labeled 5a on page 107. The newer 9010 have a 8mm venturi screw (vs 5mm on older models) and the top plate clips on rather than being glued on. I would disregard the instructions, we changed them for the next printing to say start with the screw open 3-4 turns for the cup and 6 turns for the foam riser.

Yes it is the venturi nozzle. I took a picture of the piece of plastic I referred to that does not connect properly. It fits on, but then you can not fit the tube on too. Three people tried it before giving up and running the skimmer without it this piece attached ...probably not too effectively. Here is a picture of the piece I am referring to...if you look closely, you may be able to see that the inside hole facing up has an indentation in the rim like it was not molded properly. Maybe that's the problem?
