I can see the difference, that the balling salts is making in the coral's color and growth
I'm very happy with the results

Carlos,

Glad to see the Tropic Marin Balling mixes working for you. Tank looks great. Are you dosing equal parts of all 3? Im still dosing different amounts of the BRS with Fana Marin Light balling elements added to the 2 part. Seems to work still

Thank you Bob
yes I'm using the equal parts now is up to 30 minutes 6 times a day

I too am doing very few water changes even less that once a month. Really just gravel vacuuming a little bit.

LMax Balling is a method of dosing ALK, CA, Magnesium, and trace elements. There are many different kinds.

The Balling Method explained

@lmax8rn @d_carloo @thysrof The True Balling Method maintains Ca and Alkalinity only. Trace elements and Mg still need to be dosed, in some capacity, to be maintained. Here is a video that better describes the Balling Method more clearly and specifically.

If you still have questions about the Balling Method, after watching this, please feel free to call me in my office during East Coast business hours at 413-367-0101.

Hope this helps!

Lou you kind of lost me I watched the video again and Dr Balling specifically refers to the original 3 part balling method. You are saying the balling method is only the 2 part and does not include the free salt, mag, and trace element components? Why does Balling call it the original 3 part balling method and sells Tropic marin 3 part method?

That's a good video. I recommend our club members view it. Perhaps we could show it at the next meeting too. It's short (3+ min) and simple.

I think I grock the basic concept. Parts 1 and 2 provide ingredients for calcium carbonate (coral skeleton) and sodium chloride results. The 3rd part has all the other important compounds that sea water has and no sodium chloride. When the free calcium and carbonate ions combine into coral skeleton (and are thus removed from the water), and the free sodium and chloride ions combine into salt, the presence of the 3rd part provides the relative balance between all the compounds and the salt, so there is not a fundamental change in their percentage quantities.

Said another way, the formation of calcium carbonate results in sodium chloride (salt) being added to the water. By also adding part 3, the original balance of salt to the other compounds in the water is retained.

I have always dosed 3 part. However, my 3rd part is a mix of magnesium sulfate and magnesium chloride that functions as a magnesium supplement.

While I am supporting the utilization of calcium and carbonate with a sufficient and stable level of magnesium, Dr. Balling would say I'm not doing the key thing of preserving the ratio of salt to other compounds in the water.

Something for me to think about.

I hear that if one is maintaining one's water appropriately balling, water changes can be viewed potentially as a temporary destabilization of the existing balance. Suboptimal from a stability standpoint.

If I were doing fewer and possibly smaller water changes, I would be more inclined to use a more premium salt, as likely I would be saving money on salt from reduction in frequency of water changes.

However, IMHO, replenishment of trace elements is not all that one accomplishes with a water change. There's also that age old adage "The solution to pollution is dilution".

Even if my dosing were dialed in perfectly, I would be inclined to do say quarterly (every 3 months) water changes just to help export whatever could cause a problem and prevent excessive build up.

Ken Exactly. In reallity it's another method of dosing your tank. Dr Balling created his process and came out with the tropic marin products and it's called balling method named after him. There are many company's who make products to dose independently or combined for a ( Balling Method) We saw the Triton Method demo at our last meeting which is similar to balling, but a little different, but also says water changes are destablinsing and therefore not necessary. Mike seems to have really great success with Aqua Forest which seems to call it the balling method as well. Im doing a no name balling method. BRS 3 part with Fana Marin Balling light elements. Seems to work pretty well. I ended up doing that because I already had the BRS 3 part and just bought a few bottles of Fana Light mixes and tried it. I may try the Tropic Marin method down the line as Carlos's tank is looking great. I also like how Mike's tank looks, but Aqua Forest like Triton is big bucks.
