New anemone parents bought needs ID...

Hello, we have a 90G reef that has a rose BTA at the opposite end, alsot with an anemone crab, pardon the quality, i used what i had on hand, please let me know what type this is and/or if it is bleached or is it the correct color.

It was sold to them as a Long tentacle anemone, want to make sure its not that 7.99 horrible condilactus that i see at Petsmart all the time... thanks for info

Looks like a terribly bleached Macrodactyla doreensis.

yeah they were told it was "white"... i said: "not likely" hopefully i can nurse it back to health. thanks for the ID.

I think once they've been bleached its unlikely for them to have a healthy life span.

On most occassions they can recover zoox and never skip a beat.

Some specimens here on RC have been bleached for years and are still kicking.

We don't factually know how long anemones live, there are lots of theories on extremely long lives though

fwiw: the anemone in the picture needs to adjust to lighting, feeding, and tank living. IME the crab is not real helpful at this point.

any way to tell what color variant it will be other than just waiting?

I also hear its a sand-boring anemone, shuld i dig it a hole out in full light or just let it be where it is in pic?

It has stayed in the area and seems to have anchored somewhat in the sand.

If it has already dug into the sand, I would leave it alone and let it get settled (as long as it can receive light). Once it has settled in, try feeding it SMALL bits of seafood (raw fish, raw shrimp, etc) to see if it will eat. He appears hungry to me (i.e. shortened tentacles) but not horribly so.

we fed a larger peice of silversides, which he swallowed, and another pea sized bite fell on him and he swallowed that one too. About 1.5 hours later i found most of both pieces half eaten and spewed out in front of him. I think he ate a little bit.

Also, i have identified through feeding two juvenile BTA's that were originally stow aways in first seeder-live sand! I dont know if they are bleached or light green or what, but one is about the side of a pencil eraser, and one about gumball sized. They have been under cover most of their short lives so far, i hope they like it in the tank! I am definitely going to be selling these guys when they get big enough though, 4 anems in one 90 is just a bit too much to worry about! ill get pics in asap.

Not BTA, E. quadircolor, those are Majano. Majano is considered a pest anemone species by most. They don't get much bigger, but reproduce like crazy.

Agreed, definitely one of the Anemonia cf. 'majano' anemones.

Ack! I am going to have to disagree with traveller on this one. I don't think that looks like a majano at all. I am pretty sure that is a small BTA.

ok... heres an update: 5 days in tank. Currently not anchored to the sand or anything. Have attempted feeding 4 times, successfull twice, when feeding VERY SLOW compared to the RBTA we have, and the porcelain crab grabs it most times. I have to stand there and defend its meal from cleaner shrinps/symbiotic crab/yellow tang it is so slow.

Right now i try small bits of silversides, if no go or snatched, then shot of mysis. He is not being picked on, but does not seem to want to anchor... Any advice will be appreciated.

pH: 8.3-8.4
temp 81-82F
alk: 130-140 ppm

Looks like a Majano to me as well... I have about 4 of them in the tank.
Unlike others though, I do not consider them to be a pest b/c they do not repoduce as fast and agressivly as Apstasia. Plus they are kinda cool looking (Greenish instead of Brown)

Now if they sting one of my corals...:strooper: :blown:

No way! Last thing I want is the majano "curse". I'm so used to majanos having a brown base and green tentacles with either no bulbs, or bulbs only at the tips. Sounds like there may be other "varieties"

Plenty of them . Chances are they are a different species, since Anemonia cf. majano is an artificial conglomeration of similar looking anemones. Basically until further research is done, these anemones are just sort of lumped into this category.
