New Anemone

Check out my new anemone!! Got him this past weekend from Sebastian Inlet. He's not fully opened, but when I found him he had been stranded from an outgoing tide for several hours. He looks to be getting better and is slowly opening up.

He is the same type as the ones I have previously posted, but still not sure of an exact species.

That's his exact coloring. Was a pretty nice find, tho I seem to be getting good ones there everytime i go.

hmm thats awsome there just out floating in the surf?
only beaches iv really been to is daytona and new symerna<sp>
and i havnt seen any critters in the water.

Nah, you have to walk around the Jetty's, they like the sorta shallow water, but it has to be moving water, and also they always hide underneath a rock ledge. They are kind of hard to find because when spooked, they collapse on themselves and look like a little ball of jelly.

Once you know what to look for, they are easier to find. I have only found anemones at sebastian tho. I went to palm beach on friday snorkeling, and didnt see even one.

hmmm you sound alot more brave then i lolz.
dunno if i like the ideah or thought of sticking my hand under ledges at the jettie's. be my luck i would grab a nice sized crab or it might grab me!

It's not really as bad as your thinking. lol

Im not talking in the huge rocks....you have to look in the little rocks where the jettie's meet the sand and the water is very shallow. Also, its not like a foot up underneath, they just prefer shade over light. So they tend to not be on the top of rocks but hiding under the shade of one.

And Saleen at new smyrna if you go south from the causway to the very end at the state park (turtle something?) there's boat ramps into the bay on one side, beach on the other

We went to the boat ramp side where all the old clam shells are and found lots of stuff in the grass flats there.. Got my blenny and pipefish there. I think phil collins (the pistol shrimp) ate all the little glass shrimp that i caught since they are MIA

That pic is only a couple hours after I got him home, and he was pretty rough shape when I found him, so I'm shooting for a better pic next weekend, since I'm out of town working all week.

Is there a difference between a rock anemone and a rock flower anemone? Because the three I have collected myself all look to be of the same species, but the brown rock flower anemone I got from TBS looks way different and his mannerisms are completely different.

I was told they were both the same thign by alot of different people

The thing is, theres a huge difference between the one i bought, and the one i caught.

well, maybe there is, but that is sjut waht i have been told, by the AquaHolics owner last....that flower anemone and the rock anemone is the same thing

Hey you know the sealifeflorida guy? he sells a bunch of anemones and he doesnt seem to mind asking questions, maybe he could help you out with the ID a little better ? I remember seeing a "rock flower" anemone on his page that.. looks much more like a flower.. yours looks liek a different species to me

or maybe its just something similar- like we say "Aiptasia" but there are many little nuisance anemones that are similar that are somehow related and spread just as fast like little glass anemones and the different color morphs.. but many are very similar in many other ways

Lol, I definately don't think it's an aiptasia, he doesnt act like the one i have, and my peppermint wont go near it. I'll try emailing Ken, and see what he says.

Oh no I wasn't suggesting it was but I was using the name aiptasia as an example.. it has many closely related cousins- for example, whatever happens to be growing in my sump is probably a relative but reacts to joes juice all the same hah

There's probably like "rock anemone" name for a bunch of stuff that maybe cousins
