The clear bottle is fresh RO water taht I am going to add a bottle of the Rotifers too. I need to add salt. I have two tanks I would like to add the other rotifers to but I just have one question. Will they mind random debri like dirt, carpet fiber/hair not sure which it is... or should I clean that all out.

After receiving the rotties, all i see in the water is dust looking debri. Should I be able to see anything moving like brine shrimp?

Also, the greenwater i added in is not getting lighter. its staying at the same level if not darker. Im not sure. I am away for 8 hours a day. Do you think i killed the rotties?

This debri is in the tank or the rotifers? Either way, Ideally it shouldn't be there.

Thats right it should look like dusty water. No you won't see them moving without a magnifying glass or microscope.

How long has it been since you added the greenwater? You possibly just added too much and its taking a while. Do an ammonia test on the water. It may be really high causing them to go dormant. Its really hard to totally kill rotifers so I doubt they are "dead" possibly just dormant. Make sure your bubbles are very gentle. You don't need much air. Strong bubbles will hamper reproduction. The females can't carry the babies when they are getting beaten up by bubbles.

What size of magnification on the microscope is needed to see them?

I have a toy microscope that goes up to "200x" whatever that is lol

I don't remember what the magnification was I think 40X. But here is a pic I took with one my wife brought home a microscope from work (School). This will give you an idea of what you are looking for. You can see the phyto as little green dots in the pic.

FB, was this thing moving under the microsope slit or pinned down/dead/dormant?

No it was alive and moving. It had it's tail anchored and was feeding.

How did you snap a photo of that by the way?

I put my lens up to the eye piece, manually focused and snapped the pics. Nikon D40 18-55mm lens.

If they are dormant just give them slight aeration and good water quality / a little food. They should come back. Cool pic FB very cool. At 200x you could probably see the cells lol.

I see dots in my rotifer tanks now. I can only assume they are rotifers. I will be trying to pickup a cheap microscope sometime soon to check. My Phyto in that tank has cleared up.

Any suggestions on how much phyto per gallon to add?

Is there a rule of thumb on that?

I also got some water and put it in my ~14 gallon (10 high). I poured a container full of rotifers from the original culture into the new one. One container = bottle rotifers came in (the tiny dannon containers). Before that I remove 2 litres of water from the new culture to replace the phyto water I would be pouring in. Saltwater was aged 1-2 weeks. I then added the rotifers. Then the Phyto, and then replace water in phyto culture.

The window-culture idea seems to be working. I really have no choice, my Light stopped working. The cultures however are not getting dark as I would like them too. Where can i get fertilizer to speed this up? Some one told my MiracleGro works but I am a bit skeptical.

Thanks in advance.
